My son was a resident at the Hickory Point Terrace Group Home from September 2020 through January 26, 2022. At our first interview at the group home we were given a glowing description of a productive lifestyle for all residents of the group home. A week later, that person resigned and left J J Maupinn. She was followed by a drove of case managers and house managers; we were unable to keep up with the constant staff shortages and turn over of key personnel. Outings consisted of van rides, only when staff could be found to be with clients. Outings were announced, then cancelled due to staffing. The most appalling was the inadequate training of staff at the group home. The well known protocol for a patient/client/resident who states thoughts of suicide or homicide is to immediately contact the group home psychiatrist and have the individual admitted to hospital for blood work and evaluation. This was not done for my son. For five (5) days prior to January 26, he told staff of his plan to kill himself and concerns about harming others. Nothing was done in spite of his brother and myself requesting his hospitalization. I also asked the case manager to to to the group home on Saturday, January 22, 2022 after my son had phoned both his brother and me with his concerns. To our knowledge, she did not go to the group home at our request. The worker on duty January 26 exhibited inadequate training, inadequate intervention and then abandoned the residents of the group home. It is never acceptable to abandon clients, patients or residents of a care facility where staff is charged and entrusted with the care of those clients, patients or residents. The job description clearly states that persons with psychiatric diagnosis and possible harm to self or others may be living in the group home. Workers are responsible for the care of these individuals. I do not understand how people can justify what happened January 26, 2022 as the full responsibility of my son when his care and health had been entrusted to those operating the group home.
