Desert garden at Huntington is one of the best. It’s on the end of the loop if you walk through the Chinese and Japanese gardens first. Save some time as it’s worth looking at and it definitely surprised us how pretty it was. It’s quite compact and very interesting. Some of the cacti were flowering when we came through and was very pretty. Enjoy

Ok I've spent a lot of time in the desert so believe me when I say, this place is WAY better than any desert you'll ever visit. So many different types of plants here, very much worth the time and effort to walk this part of the garden. Admission included with garden visit.

Oohs and ahhs at every turn! I was fascinated at the seemingly endless colorful variety of all this that grows in a desert!
There’s cactus, grasses, shrubs, succulents, trees and wildflowers here.
So take a look and experience the unexpected garden of the beautiful desert!

This garden looks other worldly. It was easily my favorite garden at Huntington. People that work on film sets might find it blasé as my companion, in response to my amazement, was like “oh yeah you don’t work on sets”. Me mockingly “Ooooo I’m so cool, I worked on sci-fi movies”. Which is cool, but also let me enjoy these massive cacti.

My favorite sub-garden at Huntington. I was expecting a lot of cactus on rocks as at other desert gardens but I was in for a surprise. This is the first 'lush' desert garden I have seen. The forms, colors, and textures are amazing. It is also huge. Parts of this garden are also 110 years old and you will see some of the largest barrel cacti in the U.S.

Just know better Desert Garden in all of Southern California. It must be a full city block of gorgeous cactuses succulents and palm trees. There are numerous paths through the gorgeous Gardens. During Springtime bloom it's really incredible. But at any time of year it's really amazing and worth checking out.

Definitely pick a cool day to explore this part of the garden. There is little shade. The variation of species and locations of origin are amazing. Some of the specimens are over 100 years old. Great planting arrangements to see the ideas of what you may want to do. All are labeled.

The Desert Garden at the Huntington Library is an experience. Walking through the garden felt like stepping into a different world. The diverse and unique cacti and succulents, set against the backdrop of the arid landscape, create a surreal and mesmerizing atmosphere. The way the garden is meticulously curated to showcase the beauty and resilience of desert flora is truly commendable.
The highlight for me was the incredible variety of cacti, some towering like giants and others with exotic and intricate shapes.

One of the most beautiful and interesting gardens at the Huntington. I'm fairly certain Dr. Seuss found inspiration here...

The Huntington Desert Garden is one of the largest and oldest assemblages of cacti and other succulents in the world. Over 100 years old, it has grown from a small area on the Raymond fault scarp when in 1907-1908 William Hertrich brought in plants from local nurseries, private residences, public parks, and from collection trips to the Southwest and Mexican deserts. Today the two dozen families of succulents and other arid- adapted plants have developed into a 10-acre garden display, the Huntington's most important conservation collection, a vital mission and challenge.

Love this area of the Huntington Garden! Hard to imagine that thus area is as close to "native" as it gets in this area of the world. They have cacti and succulents from all over the world. They recently redid the pathway for part of this garden. Worth checking out if you are visiting for the first time.
