Mama J's Kitchen

I found Mama J's after needing last minute catering options 4 days prior to my event. Mama J's online catering order option made it easy to order my food. The food was on time and every single thing ordered was delicious. The caterers checked my order several times to make sure I had everything I ordered. Everyone was kind and professional. We ordered for 10 people and still had plenty leftover.

Located in the heart of Richmond, Mama J’s Kitchen offers a warm and inviting atmosphere alongside delicious Southern comfort food. During our visit as a party of five, we were greeted by Briana, a delightful waitress who provided excellent service throughout our meal.

I opted for the catfish dish paired with candied yams and string beans, and I found it to be a satisfying choice. The flavors were well-balanced, and the portion size was generous. However, I was disappointed to learn that they were out of sliced cheese, preventing me from ordering the grilled cheese for my child. Nevertheless, the baked chicken I ordered for them turned out to be a hit.

Despite this minor hiccup, our overall experience at Mama J’s Kitchen was a positive one. The friendly staff, cozy ambiance, and tasty food left us eager to return and explore more of the menu on our next visit to the Richmond area. If you’re craving authentic Southern cuisine in a family-friendly setting, Mama J’s Kitchen is definitely worth a visit.

The food was incredible!! I had catfish nuggets as a starter and crab cakes, mac&cheese, cabbage, and yams. Plus a slice of lemon pound cake. When I tell you everything was sooo good whew um um the fish was crispy outside and moist inside. The crab cakes were made of real crab meat and tasted so good with all the perfectly made side items. The cake reminded me of my Grandma's authentic cakes made from scratch in that circular cake pan with the ridges and hole in the middle whew I can't wait to go back.

Everything was GREAT to me. I got the chicken wings with the collard greens, yams, Mac & Cheese… I also tried that cake and a sweet potato pie. I ate all of it…. I would definitely recommend anyone to try this place out.. I’m from NC and I like to try a bunch of different restaurants. I also did a video on YouTube.

I’m from Florida, I Went here today and was no wait line was sat down soon as we entered the door. Food was fresh and hot an didn’t take long to come out. The collard greens wasn’t to my liking needs more seasoning but was good everything else I had was very good especially the catfish. I also bought a peach cobbler to go I didn’t like it . They lemonade was good also. I definitely would go back and definitely recommend 9/10

It's BLACK RESTAURANT EXPERIENCE WEEK. Hubby and I had Mama Js on our to do list. And where here now enjoying lunch. We both got Catfish. I got the Mac and cheese, yams 🍠, he decided on the Collard greens, and side salad 🥗 which was huge. OUR server Brianna super sweet and was on top of everything. We will be back again soon.

OMG!! What an experience! We selected this restaurant randomly while driving through Richmond VA. To our surprise, this was the best soul food restaurant I have ever experienced. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside but juicy inside. The flavors of the green beans, the Mac and cheese, the yams, the collards, and the cornbread were to die for!! If you are in the Richmond area and you are in the mood for some great tasting soul food, Mama J is the spot. If there is a wait for a table, don't leave because the service, the food, and the staff are wonderful.
Do not forget to get some delicious peach cobbler amd lemon cake.

I really enjoyed my visit here today! This was my third time here! My server Kei was great and showed me great customer service. I had just got my mixed drank and was moving a chair for another guest and knock my cup over and broke it. Kei and her bartender had me another drink within 5 minutes and assisted me with cleaning. My only
Issue today would be the bathroom. Right now it’s unisex and when I went in, it was piled up with toliet paper, but clean. I’m glad I walked in before all those women so they didn’t have to see that, but I touched it up (the OCD in me). All seriousness, with a place last this and the business you guys get, you definitely wsnt to get that other bathroom back in working order. I have appointments every 3 weeks for a while and will be coming by every single visit! Thanks again for everything today!!!

Visited from NY and I must say EVERYTHING we had Was EXCELLENT.. Perfectly seasoned... The food fills you up and you leave so full and satisfied.. Thank you to our Waitress. She was so helpful and has such a good soul

THIS PLACE IS A MUST! THE STAFF IS A1 the FOOD IS AMAZING! And the atmosphere reminds you of mamas kitchen! I had carfish and cabbage with the mac and cheese and tasted the greens! I was literally deink the juice from the greens after! My waitress was the best and i wish i knew her name she made it even more enjoyable if you are in the area its worth every penny and its very AFFORDABLE!!!❤❤❤❤👍👍👍

If I could give 10 stars I would. Every single time I come to Richmond and eat at Mama J's the experience is outstanding. I got to introduce several coworkers to her catfish, collard greens and Mac and Cheese tonight. It was incredible as always. The waitress (Nae) was super helpful, attentive and friendly. Just a great little place to feel like you're home. Oh and don't miss the Bread Pudding with Lemon Sauce, to die for.

Danielle, the waitress, was FABULOUS!! She was extremely helpful in her suggestions and really took care of our party of 5. She was warm and welcoming, which made our time pleasurable. The food was great and my recommendation will be the catfish and cabbage - hands down!! Thanks for a wonderful experience and we'll definitelybe back!!

Easily one of the best meals I've had. Worth the trip to Richmond from southern VA just for the food.

Everything was absolutely delicious our server was so sweet and amazing towards us! I’ve never had such a great experience at a restaurant before, definitely makes sense why it was so busy !

We had a craving for good southern food. Mama J’s was great! We had the fried chicken and mashed potatoes along with fried catfish and collard greens. The place was bustling with business. Very popular place. Wish I could have tasted some dessert because it looked like they had pies and cakes too.

Recommended to us by our friend, we answered our craving for Southern food by walking over to Mama J’s for lunch.

Sharing our meal - we ordered the dark meat fried chicken, the catfish, and brisket entrees. The entrees came with corn bread muffins. For our sides, we ordered the collared greens, candied yams, and mac and cheese.

The surprise favourite entrée was the catfish which was breaded and cooked to perfection. The fried chicken was 10/10; seasoned and crispy. Our favourite side was the candied yams. I wish I had the recipe; they were so good.

For dessert, we shared the peach cobbler and bread pudding. The bread pudding was my favourite of the two. It came with a wonderful lemon sauce.

The staff and service was friendly and attentive. I definitely would recommend Mama J’s to anyone visiting RVA.

My ribs were so good I used my hands the ENTIRE time and look at those bones pretty ! When your bones look like this at one of those other places, post'em for ME.
No Stouffers Mac and Cheese over here real real real cheddar. Those muffins were made with love ❤ and they didn't need butter, but I slid some on there.
The pork chops with gravy and onions 🌰 was seasoned NICE.. flavored, not salty.
Okay, so the desserts were just what I needed to add an exclamation point to yummy. They didn't disappoint the bread pudding and the German chocolate cake was homemade! Meaning every bite was pecans and coconut..truly a treat.

Mamma J’s should be a 10 star! Absolutely the best restaurant hands down in downtown Richmond. I fly all across the states for work and I must say the soul, love and passion put into this food is on fire! I highly recommend when in the downtown Richmond area that you make it a point to stop by this little spot! Support this small business! My partner and I will be back for sure.

Mama J’s Kitchen in Richmond Virginia is the place to be for brunch and dinner. This soul food restaurant food is absolutely delicious, amazing and the atmosphere is amazing also. My friend and I went last night and decided to go back there for lunch brunch.😊❤🙏
