Payne's Sandwich Shop and Soda Fountain

After shopping in Unclaimed baggage we decided to eat in the first local place we find. We went around the square and POOm, there it was in a corner. We found a parking in front of the door. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable! We loved the decor and atmosphere . While we were waiting for our food we paid attention to other tables desserts and that’s what made quit my diet for 2 days. I hope that y’all last forever. I definitely recommend this place. I can’t wait to be back.

This is a step back in time yet not outdated. Service was excellent. Place is spotless and clean restrooms. Most importantly food was excellent with reasonable prices. I had the Reuben. I’ve enjoyed many a Reuben but this was spectacular. The corned beef was tender and thick. Kraut was generous as well and it was served steaming on perfectly toasted Rye. The better half had the Grilled Chicken Melt with a side of potato salad and was quite pleased. I had a few bites of the potato salad. It was tasty and I generally don’t like potato salad. Lastly, the server advised because I asked that the red slaw Dog was their biggest seller so I also ordered one. It was okay but not great. I’ll definitely have another Reuben when I next find myself in Scottsboro AL. If you read this far please hit the like. Thank you and enjoy Payne’s.

Great classic sandwich/ ice cream shop. Great food and service. Well located for events on the square. Only negative is not much seating during peak hours. Kids loved it and the kids menu was well priced for young kids. All sandwiches under 10$ but add chips (no fries).

I love small towns and Scottsboro, AL is a quaint town to visit. We stopped at Paynes soda fountain/sandwhich shop before leaving town. Very nostalgic and just made me happy being there. The staff was very bright and friendly. The food looked great but we stopped for the ice cream. First, there are ALOT of options (cones, splits, sundaes, shakes, malts, etc.). Lots of toppings and flavors to choose from as well. I made my own sundae and the young lady did a fantastic job as she put the sundae together like a parfait. Every bite had everything instead of just on top. My husband went for a cone but also purchased one of there enormous brownies. One other AMAZING thing…the prices. My sundae was only $6!!!!! What?!?!?!?! This place is really cool and is obviously one of the favorite spots in town.

Hands down the best Reuben Sandwich I have ever had! Also ordered a Smokey Mtn Chocolate Milkshake and a Chicken Melt. All of it was absolutely amazing! 10/10 recommend!

What an amazing place. You can feel the history. All servers were happy and friendly. Awesome ice cream and very customizable. Can't wait to go back and try the actual food, not just ice cream

I had lunch today with 2 more ladies. I Had the Cobb salad today it was wonderful. We all at Ice cream for dessert delicious as always.

This is one of very few restaurants that has five star food and service from beginning to end. The best milkshake in three counties. We drove in from Huntsville just for their reputation. We were not disappointed.

A step back in time! The best Spinich salad ever! Very friendly service and very competative pricing. Must see to appreciate. This place dates back to the mid 1800s! Great story.

Great little sandwich and ice cream shop! Enjoyed eating here with my family this past weekend. Our server was friendly and helpful and the staff overall was very attentive. We will be coming back soon! I'm especially looking forward to ordering their Shrimp Croissant sandwich again.

Cutest little historic ice cream shop in Alabama will take you back in time! Nostalgically decorated. Established in 1869!!! They serve hand dipped ice cream, shakes, sundaes, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, & hotdogs. The homemade dill chicken salad and the homemade pimento cheese are a must! The staff are welcoming and friendly! It’s worth the trip if are ANYWHERE in Alabama or Tennessee. They are closed on Sunday.

These are the joyful finds that make weekend exploring so much fun! What a cool, neat little shop with a great decor and the sweetest wait staff!! I didn't know what a red slaw dog was when I got there...still don't fully know if I do, ...but it sure is tasty! The shakes were great and a fun stop.

We found this little local HOT spot on a recent trip to Scottsboro. The food is wonderful, wait staff is super friendly, and the atmosphere is awesome. We will definitely put this on the must eats for our next trips to town.

While it's clear that their ice cream offerings are the main draw, do not overlook the sandwiches and hotdogs. The BLT and White Slaw Dog were among the best we've had. However, the star of the menu is the Grandma's Potato Salad; hands down the best I've ever eaten. (Sorry, Mom.)

We got an order to go the other day from here and they mixed up our order with someone else's.. we didn't find out till we got home and we called.. they were very apologetic and gave us a refund.. I understand that things happen so it's okay.. I've been going to this place since I was a boy and I've always loved it.. I'm not going to stop just because a mistake was made.. love their slaw dogs and milkshakes here.. employees are always nice.. great place to visit and very good food too..

My first time and it was awesome we sat at the bar and watched them make all kids of different sundaes and shakes it was great...

Flew in to check out the Unclaimed Baggage store. While that place is amazing, Payne's was actually the highlight of my trip. Phenomenal sandwich, delicious ice cream, and the friendliest service I've had just about anywhere. I'll be making another trip to Scottsboro just to drop into Payne's!

A real nostalgic step back in time. Though they offer lunch items, we came for the ice cream. They have the basic flavors as well as few you don't often see. I chose the Elvis. Vanilla ice cream with sliced bananas and covered in peanut butter sauce. It was yummy. SO got the Snicker sundae. Vanilla with Snickers minis and chocolate syrup. Daughter got a scoop of Birthday cake topper with gummy bears. A sugar overload she said. The atmosphere was great and the ice cream was delicious. We will be back. Maybe this time we'll try lunch too.
