Dr. Spinnickie performs the newer 'anterior' hip replacement procedure These have quicker recovery and less movement restrictions. I had mine done in spring of 2013. Although I've had some issues with thigh pain, the actual artificial hip seems perfect so far. I was able to walk [a little] without a cane eight days after the surgery.

Four months later I was climbing steep mountain trails with no hip pain whatsoever. Not saying that your experience will be the same, but Dr.S. and his office staff are usually friendly and efficient. Office wait times can be quite long sometimes but so are all the rest, AFAIK. They all suck in that regard, don't they..

If you're really scared of pain, yeah, it will be pretty bad for the first few post-op days, but then it slowly disappears. Chin up. An ice-pack works wonders, too.

If possible, keep your options open about going into some local in-house physical therapy rehab unit for a week or so after the operation , it'll make thing a LOT easier in the long "run".

Addendum: 2.5 years later, hours of trail climbing and hiking in general are still no problem at all.
