Kalamazoo Music School

We had our first experience with Kalamazoo Music School through Sensory Sunday. It was a great experience for both of my children, and they had a lot of fun! Jessi was so welcoming and did everything she could to accommodate my children's needs, as well as the needs of other students. We are so excited to return to the next Sensory Sunday!

I have been welcomed by the school and the staff each time I have been there. When I inquired about sensory Sundays they were pretty accommodating when I needed to introduce my child to their building before we came.

I think that this initial sensory Sunday is somewhere to build from. The staff were very accommodating of my child's needs and for the most part things were fairly accessible for them. I didn't feel there was any forced participation.

I think as a parent with special needs children it can sometimes be a little bit hard to introduce others to your family and your dynamic. I didn't feel that anybody in particular was singled out or overbearing or anything like that. I think with more repetition it will obviously get easier for everybody involved. Everybody has different disabilities and different levels of communication. Everyone that attended and participated were accommodated to the best of everybody's abilities including the staff.

I think that with honest feedback the program could grow and it could be something very special I just think that it isn't fair to judge something very quickly. We plan on having our child come to more of these classes to see if it's a good fit for them. These are not traditional music lessons at any rate it is more something appropriate for those with disabilities.

The classes they do offer however are taught by excellent staff who are pillars of the music community around here. They are very knowledgeable about the instruments they specialize in. Anybody seeking to start or improve their craft with music I think should seek the school out. In my brief visits to the school I've seen many different people from all walks of life welcomed into their doors.

Jessi and Emily did an amazing job with Sensory Sundays today! All of the kids had an amazing time. Not only did they get to participate in music but they were also able to do arts and crafts. Can't wait for the next one! :)

Absolutely LOVE this place...We've been learning and growing in our music knowledge as an entire family thanks to Kalamazoo Music School. My daughter and I have both been students for voice lessons, my daughter has taken trumpet lessons and even participated in various jazz ensembles. First rate experience all around, from Benji and Ashley down through all the teachers. Special shout out to Alison who has worked so hard with both my daughter and I in developing our voices and our confidence. Can't say enough THANKS to you, and look forward to growing with you in the future!!!

Kalamazoo Music School is absolutely awesome! Our oldest daughter loves taking lessons there! She has gained so much confidence in her skills and loves performing! The Kalamazoo Music School staff members are so friendly, caring, organized, and supportive!

We love this organization! Our son is having fun and learning so much. We have been impressed with how professional the KYJO sounds when performing. The value of life long love of music is definitely present. Josiah is a great teacher, the way he shows the students the importance of recognizing the history of Jazz and the respect for the men and women is honorable and so important for our young people to understand

Kalamazoo Music school is a diverse, nurturing environment. They tailor instruction to student interests. My son takes piano lesson but they also offer lessons voice, guitar, drums, and other instruments. We are proud to be a part of what this school is doing in Kalamazoo.

My daughter has been coming here for years now! Her voice and confidence has developed and grown throughout her time with them. I cannot express how thankful I am to have KMS be an outlet and a safe place to express musically and to be herself. As a music educator myself I have always been so pleased with the programs that KMS offers. Two of my children studied at KMS and loved it! It was the formative years of their music learning and during Covid and the KMS staff rocked it! Before Covid, the jazz ensembles that would travel to schools was outstanding. The greater kalamazoo area is so lucky to have a resource like this!

Our daughter had her first Showcase performance after just a few months of piano lessons. She was so excited to show she could play a song "with both hands". The staff is so wonderful:amazing, caring individuals. Couldn't be happier.

It is truly a joy to experience performances of the JCI ensembles and individuals. So exciting to watch these talented musicians as they grow and sharpen their musical abilities! The recent event at The Union in Kalamazoo was a great time at a very nice venue. Kudos to Ashley, Benje and their faculty & staff, for the awesome work they do! Amazing staff! Benje and his entire staff are phenomenal! This experience for our son has been incredible. Being a part of a jazz ensemble, learning new music and meeting students from all over the area has really helped him grow as a musician! We would encourage anyone that has an interest in learning more about jazz, this is where you need to start!

This organization is amazing! JCI goes well beyond JUST teaching private lessons, they are creating a community for the students to be a part of. Learning jazz goes far beyond just private instruction and individual practicing. It is a communal type of music, and Benje and Ashley are doing an excellent job at creating that type of environment.

The people of Kalamazoo is so lucky to have JCI in their community to foster the love of jazz through education, collaboration and performance! Top notch educators and dedicated leadership ensure a high level of quality in everything they do!

I'm personally taking lessons with Eddie Codrington for alto saxophone. Eddie is so great to work with! He's very patient, humble, and kind. Not to mention he's a total whiz when it comes to jazz & playing the saxophone! All of the faculty are extremely talented, educated, and experienced. I highly recommend Jazz and Creative Institute. Very high quality team & services!

I had a really great time taking vocal lessons with Ashley. While I only had a few months to work with her, she made the most of our time and gave me a lot of warm-ups and ideas for how to continue progress in jazz singing. I especially like how often they have jam sessions and other practice opportunities to meet/practice with other persons taking lessons.
