Joseph A Donnellan, MD

I have known Dr Donnellan for over twenty years. Both as a colleague and a family member of a patient. I attest he is an excellent, caring psychiatrist. He is able to provide cognitive treatment while remaining personable and caring. Thank you, Dr Donnellan for making a difference in so many lives.

Dr. Donnelan is one of the finest psychiatrists we have in New Jersey. He is an expert in the treatment of eating disorders and always did his own evaluations when he could have had others do them for him. He is a leader in our field and deeply compassionate and caring about his patients. Patients who work with him go on to full recovery and have quality of life they did not even expect. As a therapist, I always benefited from his mentorship and teamwork.

I have been a patient of Dr. Donnellan's for quite a few years. I was dealing with several issues. I was a victim of abuse from a family member since childhood. It was very hard for me to trust him at first. He was so patient and kind. When I finally opened up, he convinced me that I was not at fault. I became a survivor rather than a victim. He also guided me through the grief process when my son passed away and then when my husband passed away. He helped me overcome the depression and move on with my life. He is a compassionate man. He is very knowledgeable about medications. Sometimes he can be very assertive when he is trying to make a point. It works. I absolutely recommend him. He is a keeper.

Dr.Donnellan is the best psychiatrist. He has helped me so much with my anxiety and panic disorder. He was able to find the right medication to help me get out and live life again. He is super caring and understanding. He calls you back promptly if you have any problems or questions. He will even get back to you after hours which is a huge plus. I'm glad I found him!!

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Donnellan. Through his expertise in treating depression, obsessive compulsive order, and bipolar disorder, along with his compassion and sincere care for each of his patients, he saved the life of my best friend. I will eternally be grateful to him for this, as well as his receptionist, Carolyn for being as equally compassionate and quick thinking. Dr. Donnellan is no doubt in my mind the best psychiatrist for patients suffering from suicidal ideation, trauma, and lifelong depression. If the world were full of more mental health professionals like him, it would be a happier and more functional society.

Dr. Donnellan saved my son's life!! He developed severe anxiety and it had ruined his quality of life!! Thanks to Dr. Donnellan, my son is able to return to his normal way of being. We saw many doctors and no one was able to resolve my son's issues. I highly recommend Dr. Donnellan and will forever be grateful to him.

While I can’t claimed to be a complicated patient for Dr. Donnellan, he was no doubt effective, compassionate, and extremely helpful. He spent the greater half an hour session consulting with me regarding my anxiety and confirming the diagnosis and was understanding of my apprehensions. Prescribed right away and was receptive and quickly adjusted when I voiced issues with my initial medication. All the times I called I heard back within the day and he was quickly responsive. Going on nearly 6 months seeing him, I feel well cared for and believe he will be attentive if I have any issues going forward.

I can’t attest to any of the negative reviews being left because I can’t speak for other people and have no way of understanding how Dr. Donnellan has gone about treating people in other positions than myself, but speaking for myself he is a class act and has done an extraordinary job with my treatment. Speaking for myself, if you’re looking to get control of anxiety and insomnia without being over prescribed, he helped me so he can certainly help you. In my experience he is not liberal with how he prescribed medication, and I feel safe that he has my comfort and well-being in mind.

A few tips, however. His office is direct Payment, so definitely confirm with your insurance provider that you can get out of network psychiatric coverage before scheduling. Also, Dr. Donnellan has a noted voice issue through no fault of his own that can make him hard to understand at times. This however has not been a detriment to my understanding of what he’s saying or my opinion of his treatment, and honestly after the first appointment I hardly notice it anymore.

Dr. Donnellan is a fantastic psychiatrist and it is my pleasure to be under his care!

In every other therapeutic experience I’ve had, there was always the feeling of that stodgy “I’m the doctor and you’re the patient” kind of relationship. Dr. Donnellan is such a departure from that paradigm. My sessions with him are more like talking to an old friend who isn’t afraid to ask the occasional tough question. I have made a great deal of progress with him in a relatively short amount of time due to his insightfulness and ability to quickly get to the heart of the matter when he sees fit. Other, more complex issues do take time to sort out, but he is also an excellent guide in this regard. I would not hesitate to recommend him to anyone genuinely committed to confront their problems and make a change for the better.

Without a doubt, 5 stars for Dr. Donnellan. I would highly recommend him to anyone. His bedside manner is impeccable, he listens with compassion, and is genuinely happy when he sees improvement with his patients. He got me on the right meds immediately, and it completely changed my life around for the better. I am so lucky to have found him, and again, would recommend him to anyone. Thank you Dr. Donnellan!!

I cannot mention enough positive aspects of coming in contact with Doctor Donnellan.I had ZERO desire to be in the hands of the psychiatric community but events in my life necessitated that I at least give this a chance to help me . I had been quietly suffering for years. The first stage of the experience was dealing with Caroline who to this day could not be more than pleasant and helpful.I have been visiting with Doctor Donnellan for 5 months.He is an exceptional listener and has mastered the art of his craft with his ability to ask the right questions at the right time. He has a manner that puts me completely at ease. He does not tell you what you want to hear but the truth of what you need to hear and helped me understand not only how I got to where I am but most importantly how to move ahead and cope with the past coupled with the necessary tools to confidently and happily move forward in life . I am extremely grateful for choosing him at a critical point in my life

Dr. Donnellan, has the warmest and kindest bedside manner. I’ve been seeing him for over 3 years and he has managed to always have a solution to any side affects or changes in my medications. I have full confidence in trusting him with my well being. If you’re looking for a great doctor but also compassionate... He is the one!

I've been seeing Dr. Donnellan for over two years now, and have not only seen improvement on my end, but have also finally found the right medication with his help. I have come to very much appreciate his tough love approach, so if you're looking to be coddled, you're in the wrong place. However, I find this to be much more effective long-term than other therapy approaches. You're encouraged to find solutions slowly but surely. He's clearly been doing this for a while! Caroline, his receptionist, is wonderful as well. She is always so warm and welcoming and more than willing to work with you in terms of scheduling. I would absolutely recommend him!

I was looking for a psychiatrist to get me through an extremely difficult time in my life when I was so depressed that mentally and physically I could not function, even at a minimal capacity. My husband of 33 years had passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.....he was 53 years old! We had so many plans and dreams yet to fulfill and now I was alone.
From the moment I read Dr. Joseph Donnellans webpage I knew that he would help me. His words seemed to fulfill what I thought I needed. As soon as I stepped into his office and met his kind and caring assistant Caroline to when Dr. Donnellan came into the waiting area to personally greet me, I felt very comfortable and at ease.
Dr. Donnellan was very compassionate and took the time to really listen to how I as feeling. Our earlier sessions were filled with me mostly in tears and Dr. Donnellan handing me tissues, never making me feel embarrassed or uncomfortable.
I now look forward to my appointment each week because I know that I can tell him exactly how I am feeling and he will listen and make suggestions that are always in my best interest. I still have a ways to go but I trust that Dr. Donnellan will get me through this.
I would highly recommend him to anyone who has unresolved issues or is just going through a rough patch in their life.

It’s been difficult to write this review due to the fact that it’s hard to put into words how grateful I am for Dr. Donnellan. He is warm. He is inspiring. And above all, he is genuine with his hope to help make his patients live better lives. Dr. Donnellan did not fill me up with drugs and send me away. Instead, through therapy, he was able to diagnose me and provide a healthy balance of medicine and knowledgable insight through weekly sessions. Anyone who is sick needs medical treatment, and the same goes for mental illness. He gives his patients the bread crumbs to follow to their own recovery, but makes sure they are standing on their own two feet to get there. He inspires by showing how life is worth living and to enjoy it and encourages taking advantage of the time we have. In that regard he is a person who practices what he preaches through skiing, boating and riding a motorcycle. He shows you life can be fun. In my darkest hour Dr. Donnellan, along with his nurse Caroline, helped save my life. I am forever grateful.

About 25 years ago I was hospitalized with a case of severe depression. Fortunately my primary doctor recommended that I see Dr. Donnellan. At that time I thought all was lost but he was able to bring me back from the depths of it and under his care I was able to return to a normal life. Throughout the years I've always felt that he has my back and he is available anytime I need him. If your situation feels hopeless give him a chance. I know for a fact that he has prevailed over very, very bad conditions and I'm sure he can help you too.

Dr. Donnellan has been a practicing psychiatrist for almost thirty years. Though my time spent with him has not been to the level of years as some other patients who have left reviews, I have never been more joyful about finding the right doctor. He does not boast, however he is extremely intelligent. He likes to allow his patients to think and advocate for themselves, and draw their own conclusions, with some guidance. He is excellent at challenging his patients, which if you are anything like myself, is much needed and eventually greatly appreciated. To those of you neigh sayers that have left reviews about being quick to assess, being a waste of time and money, and quick to medicate, I invite you to rethink your experience with Dr. Donnellan. Do we not all quickly assess a situation when it is thrust upon us, whether right or wrong? Second- your time, your money. Trust me, he makes your time worthwhile whether you see it quickly or it takes a bit. Medication- stop and think how long it may take to find the right combination. You have to start somewhere, and proceed with what works and what may not work. Give yourself and Dr. D some patience, and you will start to see a difference. Overall, I could not recommend a better listener, positive instigator, and excellent clinician. If you are willing to change, and put the effort into doing so, Joseph Donnellan is the right fit for you.

Dr. Donnellan listens to all your concerns, asks questions to help him know you better, and treats you with respect and care throughout your visit. He truly seems to enjoy his work and that translates to excellent help for YOU!

Dr Donnellan has been a terrific caring doctor for my daughter. He has been able to help her thru multiple bouts of depression and anxiety.
