Oakland Public Library: Golden Gate Branch

I live in Emeryville and this is my neighborhood library and I love it! The staff are so nice, helpful and friendly. I can order almost any book I want online and in days gets an email saying it's waiting for me at Golden Gate!

This is one of the best libraries I've been in. The collection of books is small but incredibly thoughtfully chosen. This is a neighborhood treasure, something to be proud of.

Me and my family have been going to this branch for over 10 years. I love the librarians, the choice of books, movies and music. We have access to collections from all branches and have them shipped here. We have attended events, won prizes, joined the Summer Reading Program and eaten lunch with community members.

I have been going to the Golden Gate Branch of the Oakland Public Library System, since I was a little girl. No matter what part of Oakland, or even if I lived in another city, the Golden Gate Branch was MY library. My family has owned homes in Golden Gate for 70-years. When I bought my home 25-years ago in Golden Gate, one of the first places I went to was the library.

The stately brick building on San Pablo Avenue, at 56th Street, became designated as a Landmark on November 4, 1980. It is one of five Carnegie libraries in Oakland.

In 1982, it became the first city library with a predominantly African American focused collection.

I love that it has a room for children's books, and on the other side are the adult books, DVD's, CD's, and magazines. Downstairs is a large meeting room with a stage. My Group held auditions there for a film project, and there are live jazz bands that perform during the summer months to standing room only crowds. There is ample parking in the back parking lot and the building is handicapped accessible.
