Crixa Cakes

Since I was younger, I would get a craving specifically for Crixa’s amaretti cake. The sponge is perfectly soaked in hazelnut liqueur…the rich flavors with the creaminess of the mascarpone cream. It’s like a dream that is perfectly balanced with a fragrant black tea (they have a great variety of teas)! Even at the beginning of the pandemic, we ordered a whole cake to pick up for my mom’s birthday and we reminisced about sitting inside the bakery, sharing a piece with a pot of tea. They are quite busy (and I’m sure some of their staff have been in since the early hours baking), so depending on the day you get less personable service at the counter, but they are always professional and courteous! I will always come back for more and definitely one of the first places I think of when I need a celebratory cake or an afternoon tea time. (The cake sign is not included haha I made it back in 2021)

Love their tiramisu!!! Best we’ve had in a loooong time. Order in advance online if you need it at a certain date.

Service was nearly nonexistent, but who cares when it’s all takeout anyway. Better off enjoying it at the comfort of your home over a properly brewed coffee.

I couldn't believe prior arriving how can you justify business just for cakes. My doubt appeared to be their Forte! They only do, and they only make cakes. Good ones! Like in the old days! Natural flavors, best fresh ingredients. Big Wow

I came here with a bit of an ordering mix up due to miscommunications on my end and the staff were so kind and worked with me to get everything smoothed out.

Great bakery, very happy they are still open. I remember going here a few times before the pandemic, and stopped by fairly recently and was glad they are still around. Good solid place for European (primarily Hungarian I think) cakes and sweets. The last time I was there we picked up a type of meringue that was fantastic.

Phenomenal eastern european bakery in the east bay and easily one of my all time favorites. Haven't had one thing here that wasn't delicious. Open 12-3 for very limited days every week with very long lines these days. I recommend doing a preorder to get what you want. Service is not the best or the friendliest (and Glassdoor reviews confirm the issue) but given it's takeout that part didn't bother me much.

I took my mom to San Fransisco last year. We went to the Ed Roberts Campus to check it out and a lawyer from DREDF told us to check out Crixa Cakes. It was only a short walk away and we were not disappointed. We got three items because we couldn't decide. I loved my pie and my mom loved her cake. We ate at a table outside and had a lovely time.

Best sour cherry pie since Denmark! Cakes are outstanding. Prices are very reasonable for the high quality baked goods! Very friendly people ! Solves my cake addiction!

Amazing cakes that are worth waiting for. They're not too sweet and have lots of wonderful flavors. Each sweet shows careful attention to detail. It seems each person has a different favorite, so I recommend trying a variety of slices. The folks that run it are also kind and polite.

Exquisite cakes and pies. The atmosphere in the store is so relaxing. I went for the first time on a Saturday and returned the following Wednesday. I have tried almost all the cakes except the ones with liquor or coffee (tiramisu/amareretti) Apple cake, chocolate cinnamon, flourless chocolate, strawberry cream, peach pie and my favorites fresh ginger (moist, spicy and dairy free) and black barb pie ( sweet, sour and flaky)

Please visit Crixa. I've driven here from wherever I've lived - all over the Bay - in the past 10 years for cake. For real. I miss some of the more savory stuff they used to do, but everything here is fresh and amazing and novel. I promise you'll love it.

Best tiramisu I've ever had, which is saying a lot, as I have had a lot of tiramisu. Crixa is really good at balancing the flavor profile, and not making anything too sweet or heavy, while still being full of the flavors you're looking for in a dessert.

Love their Poppyseed Rugelach. So hard to find cakes with crushed poppyseeds. Definitely genuine Central European treat brought to Berkeley 😋

I'll let you in on a little secret. The sour cherry pie is the best pie I've eaten in my 7 decades of life. Run, don't walk, when it's on the menu

Excellent bakery to visit when I am in the bay area. I am the owner of Mobile Identity Services LLC and I visit whenever I have a mobile client for Live Scan Fingerprinting, FD-258 Ink Cards or Notary Services. I have tasted almost everything sweet that they offer. This establishment will not disappoint you. Go early as everything is freshly made and may disappear if you come later in the day.

Apple cake: One of the most moist, delicious apple cakes you will ever experience. Made with apples and walnuts in a not-too-heavy-but-not-light batter, the texture of the fruit and cake is incredibly satisfying. The walnuts are a welcome addition that enhances the flavor and texture. Truly a Goldilocks cake: not too wet, not too dry, not to sweet, not to savory... juuust right. I've truly enjoyed every experience I have had ordering this cake.

Pave vergiate (flourless chocolate cake): Not too sweet, not too rich. Velvety chocolate, almost like mouse or souffle, not heavy at all. Gorgeous with some black coffee. The serving size is generous, too much for me to finish in one setting! Perfect two share, I think. Whipped cream on the side is a bit clumpy, but is unsweetened and pairs well with the cake.

Bizet (vanilla meringue with vanilla cream): Perfect meringue and delicious cream that balances the sweetness of the meringue well. One of the sweeter options and goes very well with coffee. Light dessert, won't leave you feeling too full or heavy!

Quaresimale (Italian almond biscotti): Not rock hard like some biscotti are, there is some chewiness and give to the cookie. Almond flavor comes through without being overpowering. Sugar content forms a perfect crunch exterior without making the cookie too sweet. Dip in coffee or eat on its own, either way it's delicious!

Americano: Strong but not too bitter or acidic, very easy to drink. Small is a perfect size to go with something sweet.

(Aug 2021) Crixa seems to have adapted well to the pandemic and COVID safety precautions. While I'm sad it has such limited hours, they are not limited in the selection of cakes they are offering. Still so much variety available which I was happy to see.

The in-person ordering process was a little confusing as there were no signs outside the bakery on how to proceed with your order. They have set up a ticket system where you go inside, pick a ticket, and when your number comes up on the light-up sign inside (you need to angle your view into the cafe to see it) or your number is called, you go in to make your cake selection decisions and purchase. I highly recommend they write up some instructional signage to help their patrons understand this system.

(Old review) I love the cakes here, they always have a unique selection and even if I don't like a specific cake, it's always an interesting flavor experience!

The bakery itself is very cute and cozy, and I often seen people chilling with a cake, coffee, and newspaper on their own, families sharing some sweets, or couples on a little date... so anyone can enjoy it here. The decor is warm, a little funky in a fun way, and though it's small, I've never felt crowded in here even if there are several other patrons inside.

We’ve been fans of Crixa for over a decade and though their cafe is no longer open, the bakery lives on. Try virtually any of their wares and you’ll immediately understand why this bakery has so many devoted customers.
