We came in looking for bikes because we want us to know what was appropriate size for the toddlers and we were willing to buy and invest in bikes for them because they have shown an interest and we have biked a ton before children and we want to pass that experience to them

My partner is very affluential and always wants to go to nice places and I get super intimidated and kind of scared because we're going to walk out with like a high-end bike and not even know what to do with it. But let me tell you you can come here and there was no pressure .
And yes we left the store buying a bike!!.
But there was no pressure and all of these people were so welcoming to have two toddlers run around in their store and try on bikes and ride around and crawl on the carpet. And you know my kids know to not like touch anything or damage. Anything going to the store is a privilege and a special event so they're not like obnoxious but still they're toddlers and most the time when you go to the store they don't want anybody around. They don't want kids around touching everything with their dirty hats but these group of people were very kind. They spoke to our children as if they were normal people. They spoke to them with kindness, gave them eye contact and really encourage them to try the bikes

We ended up buying one bike for the 4-year-old and we brought in the 3-year-olds by hoping we could put training wheels on it and unfortunately with the make and model it was not able to put training wheels on it but they did try they weren't welcoming. They took the bike and you know but they were super informative and they explained their buyback program where it's a huge incentive to come and buy at their store. And you know this could be our spot for the long-term to come. I could see myself buying a new bike care even though I love my trek. You know Mom needs a new bike

Their bike mechanic Brendan acts like he owns the place!!!!

It's been a long time since I've seen someone who cares so much about their work and helping customers. I took my newly acquired bike down for pedals and ended up having an hour-long conversation where Brendan got me up to speed on modern mountain bikes and thanks to the time of day he had time in his schedule to give me a safety check and tune-up. Excellent work, fair price, and expert knowledge and skills. Will never go anywhere else!

I emailed to ask about getting a cheap but hard-to-find part shipped to me. Frank kindly took my payment info over the phone and promptly shipped the part. They definitely didn't make any money but were happy to help anyway.

I came here a while ago for a tune up and to install a dropper post on my 500 bucks bike lol. My bike didn’t support having one installed but they went above and beyond to find a solution and retrofit a cable outside. When I tested it, the dropper fell slightly after minutes riding my bike. it was so annoying since it was hard to reproduce for me and them, it wasn’t an easy thing to see by any means. They could have turned me back in the first instance saying I just should get a new bike, or brushed off my concerns, but instead I took my bike back and they fixed it! The customer support I got speaks volumes about the company and how nice everyone is in there. And exactly the reason why we need to support our experienced local businesses.

Bought a Yakima rack for our bike. The staff spent a lot of time with me in person and over phone to find just the right one that matched our bike and car and other requirements. They helped me put the rack together and were patient while I took multiple videos of the process so i could manage the rack without having to call them or the manufacturer or look at youtube. Their knowledge of all things bicycle is amazing and they are kind to their customers with no hard sell.

Several bikes from my childhood have come from Hank & Frank's original Oakland store. One particular memory is of a bright yellow Schwin Stingray with the banana seat and sissy bar!
Now I'm in the market for a high end MTB. My beloved Ibis Mojo HD3 was destroyed when I was rear ended on the freeway while it was on the back of my car.
I'm now torn between a sweet Yeti SB130 from Rhythm Bikes in Mont Clair (also an EXCELLENT and highly recommended shop!) and an Ibis Ripmo from Lafayette Hank & Frank.

Steve was super friendly and knowledgeable about the bike, as he owns one himself and was happy to set me up with multiple test rides on two different frame sizes. He pumped up the tries, raised the dropper seatpost for my height and even adjusted the rear shock for my weight. He handed me a helmet and pointed me to a route through the neighborhood. Though he was multi-tasking with other store business, I never felt neglected or not paid attention to (of course I was riding around on $8k worth of bicycle... so he wasn't going to ignore me TOO much, lol)

I haven't purchased the bike yet, but my experience with the shop has been very excellent. I'm going back again today to check it out further. If I do pull the trigger on a Ripmo, it will definitely be from my old friends at Hank & Frank!

I drive the 30+ minutes to Hank and Franks, bypassing several other bike shops that I've dealt with in the past. Hank and Franks is the ONLY shop that was able to diagnose and fix a long-standing problem on my Giant Defy Advanced. They are friendly, knowledgeable, honest, and they just do things right. They've go my service business for life!

We live in Berkeley and bought our bicycles at the Oakland store, which apparently is phasing out. For months my gears would rattle while in first or second gear, with the main gear in second. I delayed getting them fixed, thinking I had maybe mashed the derailleur when I had fallen over at a stop.

Eventually, I finally put the bike in the extended trunk and took it out to Steve in Lafayette, fearing a big bill and a long wait. Steve found that a little steel part, which served as an attachment point on the frame for ease of repair, had been bent. He replaced it the next day. The total bill was $20, and all gears now work fine. As a bonus, someone's friendly dog, Cisco, sleeping on the floor, gave the shop the aura of a mello Berkeley business from the sixties. Now the Lafayette store is my repair shop, and I won't fear the trip through the Tunnel. These guys know their stuff.

Outstanding customer service. The staff is knowledgeable, honest, and trustworthy.

No job is too small. Everyone is very patient. The most mundane questions are answered with patience and in terms an average Joe can understand. No concern anyone will try to up-sell you.

I own several bikes, a couple of which has been looked over and/or serviced by Steve, Frank, Doug, Andy, and Will.

Best bike shop in the Bay Area, this shop goes the extra mile to make sure you stay on the road, free tune ups for the life of the bike. Killer annual sale as well.

Every Bike shop on the planet will get some bad reviews, people just don't respect bikes and the employees that work on them. I've witnessed many reviews online and customers in stores with attitudes. People expect the best for the least and that's just not how it works. Hank + Frank is an awesome shop and a great resource in the bay area, especially because of Josh the head mechanic who is not only an expert level rider but also always up to date with the latest stuff and is a true professional. They are not super cheap or a deal though, like most shops they charge a premium. If you're looking for a steal of a deal that's not them, but if you want good knowledgable people, lots of variety of parts in stock, excellent mechanical work, and are willing to pay whats fair, they can't be beat.

Came in this morning after blowing a flat during my ride. The guys got me setup, new tires and tubes, and they were super nice and put them on for me for free. Thank you! Great service!

This place is a great local bike shop. They try to match you with a bike that will fit your ride style and don't sell you on something that you will be disappointed with. When things settle down, come in and talk with any of their staff to learn the ins and outs of biking

Being from Oakland I grew up going to Hank & Franks on Saturday’s with my friends in the late 70’s. We were a part of The BMX era. The Oakland location by Lake Merrit will always bring back fond memories.
