I am very grateful to the workers at Animal Control in Hawthorne. About a month ago, they picked up a little kitty, maybe two weeks old, and yesterday they also picked up a wild bird (falcon) with the broken wing. I could tell that they are very concerned about animals and make our community a belter place. Way to go!

I’d like to thank the team at Hawthorne Animal Control for finding and saving my dog. I left a voicemail on Sunday afternoon informing them I lost my dog and they called back minutes later. The lady who provided me with assistance was great and advised me they found my dog and gave me the address of the local shelter where he was transferred to. Hawthorne Animal Control is doing an amazing service for the Hawthorne community by helping owners be reunited with their beloved dogs. I greatly appreciate it!

My family has dealt with this agency more than once. Both times we were treated very well by their staff. Once on a animal body recovery (sadly) and once on a lost dog that they(officer Diaz) were instrumental in helping us find. I have only thanks to give Hawthorne animal control. Keep up the good work guys and gals!!

Hawthorne animal control has always come out when I've called about a dead opossum or a wounded opossum or a lost dog. Granted, I have to leave a message but they always seem to get to it. I think they're great, it's a nice service for the city!

I’ve been calling and calling all morning, but they don’t answer. I understand it says they’re closed on their website but why does it say they’re open from Sunday to Saturday, 7 days a week on their voicemail. That’s false advertising! If you’re closed, then it’s best to create a new voicemail!!! Sooo annoying!!!

I found a stray cat a few months ago that I cannot keep because 1)I cannot afford it, and 2) I will be moving soon and cannot take her with me. I have no one that I can ask to take her and I just needed help with the process of surrendering her so that she can find a new home. I tried calling animal control (multiple times on multiple days on which they were open), just to get no answer. I tried leaving a voicemail. Still nothing. Went to city hall to ask, they gave me another number. Nothing. I went to my local SPCLA center and was told to look towards The Lovejoy Foundation. I left a filled digital page with my information and my situation and waited for a week or more and didn’t hear anything from them, so I called the office. I finally was able to speak to someone, and explained my situation, only for the lady to give me a rude tone as if I was sounding entitled (but I just really need their help?… and I was told they could receive animals). She told me to call animal control and I explained to her that I did with no response and she told me to “call them because the rehoming process starts with them”. I’m genuinely concerned because what are people who can’t find a solution to this specific type of problem supposed to do? This miscommunication seems like an issue that needs to be discussed amongst the SPCLA, Animal control and Foundation in this city for future cases. I will not be trying to get in contact with these particular groups that claim to help, when in reality, they belittle people’s concerns and don’t help.

I just reported a very sick, elderly cat in the street. The officer arrived quickly enough but was yelling that she was sick and tired of coming to my house picking up cats, when in fact this is the first time it's ever happened. (My next door neighbor has had her roaming, unfixed cats picked up numerous times, not me.) We had a useless back-and-forth but she refused to accept that she was wrong.
The elderly kitty didn't need his final day to end with a shrieking liar stressing him out. Hawthorne Animal Control needs to fire their current staff and hire competent personnel.

I think it's a great idea to take a video of these guys in case they act so funny towards the animals. And the entitled sour people at the office should seriously quit their job. I can bet if it was these nasty workers along with the neglecting dogs owners the ones being tied up or injured instead of the dogs, they would have been barking even louder.

I reported an injured animal to be euthanized. Two Animal Control officers arrived, laughed at the very sad state of the hurt animal, picked it up by its neck and started wiggling her, saying, "Spine's broke! We can't fix this." I said I reported BECAUSE the animal was too injured and NEEDED to be euthanized, not "fixed". I asked them to treat the hurt animal gently until she was put down, and they answered, "Yeah, it's getting put down alright, HA HA!" The two officers I saw should not be allowed near animals (or people for that matter). They did not know how to do their job correctly.

I find a lot of lost dog's in my neighborhood. Tragically once again this for profit joke has their ringer silenced or something, because calling back to back all day, only brings anger. I will pray this place gets different ownership every time I call for each lost dog I see I will say another prayer, and direct my strong energy of emotion towards faith and prayer, before dispair consumes me. I'm going to look up Peta and see if they can take action against this place. Found it. Call PETA at 757-622-PETA.

They simply don't answer their non-emergency line. I've called repeatedly during their hours and left messages but have gotten nothing.

If animal control does such a bad job ... why would anyone choose to use them for anything? They obviously are useless.... people that are reading this.. GO somewhere ELSE!! If you choose this place your just ruining an animals life even more than its already been. Think outside of the box and figure out a better solution than animal control. Please!

@ Low cost vaccine clinic. The vet clinic staff was generally pretty nice but the city animal control staff was pretty bad. Just overall rude. Don't recommend.

Reported a dead animal that was left in a box in a neighborhood and they never did anything. It's still rotting in the box. Whatever the animal is. Sad.

It is the worst animal control service. I'd give it a -5 rating if it was possible and I absolutely don't recommend calling or reaching out to Hawthorne Animal Control.
