Cross Creek Kayak Launch

The park is great for fishing and family activities. However, the approximately 3,000 huntable acres have been virtually ruined. The decision to allow the fields to grow over has had a serious negative effect on wildlife management. The turkeys have all but left the park, and the deer population has suffered as well. The vegetation in the former fields may provide cover, but it provides virtually no food. Turkeys and geese do not like the heavy field cover because they can not see predators in that mess. Thus, the reason you always see turkeys in open fields. The deer like to eat the short vegetation in open fields, and the tall (mostly goldenrod) vegetation prohibits the growth of forage vegetation. As a result, the deer are limited to browse, which is a much poorer quality food source. Unfortunately, the overgrowth of the fields seems to be a misguided attempt at "habitat enhancement." I have spent a lot of time in the park since before the lake was filled and am becoming more and more disappointed in its management.
