Absolutely the best kept secret as far as proximity to downtown Chicago and flying privately. I'm here on a weekly basis and the staff is amazing would highly recommend this airport to anyone who's interested in top flight no nonsense transportation services! Heritage of my hometown Gary, Indiana; plays an intricate part in development for our city.

The different types of airplanes that come in (thunderbirds, lima limas, jets, helicopters, etc.) are so amazing. Even driving past here is a real treat. It's always wonderful to see a plane taking off. And there are so many different kinds of airplanes to look at. If you love aviation, then this is the perfect place for you.

Had a great time at the Car, Truck, & Motorcycle Show in the parking lot of the Gary Chicago Airport. We even watched planes and jets fly in and out from the Air & Water show taking place at Chicago's Lakefront.🚕🛩🏍✈🚙🛬😊

Since the closing of Meigs Field in Chicago, Gary has served as something of the executive airport of Chicago due to its proximity to the Loop. Multiple celebrities with their own planes either fly to Gary when they are visiting Chicago or base their planes there if they live in the Chicago. This has included President Obama and Air Force One and Boeing which keeps its executive fleet there... Boeing being headquartered in Chicago. The airport is also the base for both the Chicago and Gary airshows and is home to one of the larger airliner repo operations in the world. Other than that, the airport is generally quite. It has a small but well appointed passenger terminal but passenger operations generally only last a couple of years at a time due to low volume.

The airport has been selling itself as a possible hub for air cargo operations and recently lengthened one runway to 8900 feet. The airport also boasts: proximity (a few miles) to 2 of the 3 coast to coast interstate highways with I 90 actually forming one border, proximity to I 65 connecting the Great Lakes with the Gulf coast, proximity to 9 of the 15 coast to coast rail lines, and international seaport access via the Great Lakes. However air cargo operations are sparse.

The airport has also been selling itself as an alternative to continued expansion at O'Hare and Midway airports as much of the land around the Gary airport is vacant industrial property. However, passenger operations at Gary generally come and go one at a time without any critical mass to make a viable passenger hub.

Excellent airport to stop at and take a break. 2 “real” FBOs on the field, however be prepared for some stiff fees. Money is aviation after all.
