This department store is one of a kind. It is an old and historical building, probably from the 1930s and 40s when Japan still occupied Taiwan. And it was restored and decorated as if it were back then. So there are many antique like artifacts, like old TV sets, old elevators with indicator dials, old school sofas, record players etc. So as soon as you enter this department store, you feel like being transported back in time. Better yet, they sell many of the older souvenirs from back in time, such as antique, arts and crafts. Although it is now a nostalgic display, back then this department store is one of the biggest and the most innovative, as it's the first department store with a modern elevator, which is a novelty to many Taiwanese back then.

This was actually my favourite place in Tainan (and I loved so many things in Tainan)! It's clearly targeted at tourists and the gifts aren't cheap... but I felt the price is justified by the service and the ambience. It was so pretty and neat that I felt I walked onto the set of a Wes Anderson movie! There was also this amazing exhibition on the third floor called 'My Little Tainan' with these cute detailed miniatures of shops and homes - it was worth the visit for that alone

I see the future of retail experience at Hayashi today. It deftly used its limited space on each floor for various corners plying uniquely designed or curated product selections. I spent some time at the book store and was delighted by the selection of English books about Taiwan.

Do plan to have dessert at the 5th floor in a beautiful classical setting overlooking the streets and the prices are very reasonable.

A must visit in Tainan! Be prepared to spend lots of time here on each floor shopping for trinkets and artisans goods. Ended up purchasing a lot of my souvenirs here but it takes time to find the good stuff! Don't forget to visit the upper floor for a great view of the city.

Some of the items are slightly on the expensive side. First floor sells mainly food related products such as noodles, sauces, spreads, and tea. Second floor onwards to sixth floor sells mainly crafts, bags and clothes. Great view on the 6th floor!

A great place to visit to see a restored historical department store from the Japanese era. A lot of great snacks and souvenirs for purchase. Well worth a visit when in Tainan.

A great place to visit, cafe on top floor was cute, historic and worth going to even for a look. Site is of 2nd department store in Taiwan, opened by Japanese and they have kept the historic charm of the building.

A very unique place littered with cute and unique souvenirs! The mall was built over 100 years ago, and inside this seemingly old building is a large and clean mall with many small shops. Many local artists sell their crafts here, and there are many unique items. You can also take the ancient lift to 6F to take photos with the 碰饼. Interesting experience!

Well preserved heritage site. Hayashi department store opened in Dec 1932 during Japanese colony. This is the first department store with elevator in Tainan area. You can find oldies in this building. Also a missile hole on the rooftop.

Upper class department store. It's a bit pricey but top-notch quality. If you're looking for a souvenir for your loved ones that you won't find on the night market, you might find something here. Also with a nice photo shoot opportunity on the rooftop.

Nice place to walk around, see the different stuff sold by different individuals. Worth walking around. Can have a drink at its cafe when you are tired.

Department store with a whopping 6 floors. Full of souvenirs and novelty items from both Japan and Taiwan. Most of them are a bit overprice though. There is only 1 store (Hayashi own souvenir shop) on the 6th floor but that was my favorite.

Good Department Store in Tainan. They sells various kinds of Japanese foods, goods, ranging from clothes, shoes, hats, cloth, key chains, knick-knacks. Basically, all of them are cute, but because this is Japanese goods, the price is a bit high, but it's worth it because of the fine quality. The 4th floor is very hot even though an additional portable air conditioner has been purchased. Hard to find parking near here, so you have to be extra patient turning around or looking for parking a bit far and walk there.

Great place to buy souvenirs and food! Take a cab here. Remember to go to the roof to see the scenery and souvenirs. There is a lift available for elderly who cannot climb the stairs. Takes about 1-1.5 hours. Have a nice dessert/ coffee if you are tired at the 5th floor!

I love how the old architecture was preserved and revitalised into a cultural hub and hipster-style department store. Good to have lots of snacks to sell there

The store which was built in Japanese style during the Japanese era in the 1930s is really nicely conserved from in and outside. As soon as you step in you feel like stepping back in time. Nice conserved details from the well kept concrete/stone stairs with their brass edging or the toilet doors which look like still original. The sold products on every level are a wife range of Japanese or Taiwanese products from the higher quality range of design, art, Decoration, jewellery or clothing. If you're in Tainan I highly recommend a visit. Not to forget the shrine on the roof which can also be visited.

The Hayashi Department Store is located near Tainan Art Museum Building 2, where you can walk and digest after eating. The transportation is very convenient. There are many Tainan gifts on the first floor, and there are many cultural and creative goods upstairs. The top floor part has a view of Tainan, which is a good attraction.
