If you are visiting Bodrum, this museum is a must. Even the fee of 350 TL should not stop you. In the well preserved casttle you can find several small exibitions presenting different themes and time periods. My advise is to visit the casttle early in the morning. Later in the day you will be confronted with some big tour groups taking endlessly selfies.

A beautiful medieval castle with a museum display from antiquity to the Middle Ages, great exhibits, an unavoidable place for all lovers of ancient history. Place with the most beautiful view in the whole of Bodrum, if you want to have great photos from Bodrum this is another reason to visit this castle

I suggest to visit during sunset to see the spectacular sunset view and enjoy the beautiful courtyards when the weather is cooler. I have visited castle and the museum so many times in the past but i enjoyed more this time after recent renovation.

The castle has multiple small museums. The Underwater Archeology Museum is the most magical although it is pretty tiny. It feels like walking back in time into an underwater world. You can see a reconstruction of a ship that sunk hundreds of years ago. Together with that, objects from the ship are displayed.

The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology in Turkey is a true marvel that immerses visitors in the rich maritime history of the region. Nestled within the Bodrum Castle, this museum offers a captivating journey through time, showcasing an incredible collection of ancient artifacts recovered from the depths of the sea.

What sets this museum apart is its ingenious blend of history and underwater exploration. Visitors are treated to a fascinating array of well-preserved relics, from amphorae to shipwrecks, each telling a unique story of ancient seafaring civilizations. The meticulous curation allows visitors to appreciate the artistry and craftsmanship of these artifacts, giving a glimpse into the past that is both educational and awe-inspiring.

The museum's immersive exhibits are complemented by informative descriptions, providing context to the artifacts and their historical significance. The highlight, undoubtedly, is the museum's ability to transport visitors into the underwater world, showcasing the archaeological wonders discovered beneath the waves.

Moreover, the museum's staff is knowledgeable and passionate, adding depth to the overall experience. The Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts, offering a profound appreciation for Turkey's maritime heritage. Visited in 1995 after spending some time at the Bozburun shipwreck excavation. I was working at the time as a freelance writer who loved nautical archaeology and scuba diving. Southern Turkey is the other side of the world for a Southern American. I understand that at present the museum is undergoing some type of renovation. Back 24 years ago it was an inspiring place housing the oldest artifacts yet recovered from a modern nautical archaeology shipwreck excavation: Ulu Burun. I was absolutely ecstatic to see some of the very same bronze oxhide ingots I'd seen some years before on the cover of National Geographic magazine. Literally (as you will see from my photos) there were conservationists cleaning these 3,000-year-old ingots of marine growth and concretions under the shade of a tree on an outside patio work area with a compressed air chisel.

Located inside the Bodrum Castle… This small museum leaves a big mark… with the number of shipwrecks in around the area due to the shallow reef… this was a prime spot for many archeological finds, especially the ceramic amphora l, which used to transport various commodities back in the day. Yup

A great museum, a bit old but the findings are unique and not like any others. There are about 7 to 8 rooms spread in the castle so if you want to see them all, give yourself about 4-5 hours. Don't miss this.

Fascinating display of ship cargo providing insight into historic shipping and trade through excellent display of relics recovered. Also insight into how underwater archeology lept forward during the 1960s.

This excellent museum is set in Bodrum’s historic castle and a great way to spend a morning or afternoon. Exhibits about underwater archaeology are interspersed with open air displays of statuary and artifacts from the castle’s history.

The castle itself is a fascinating place to explore, with beautiful views of the ocean and a history that stretches from the days of the Knights of St John through to its bombardment by the French during World War I.

But despite the beautiful surroundings, the archaeological exhibits, housing artifacts mostly recovered from shipwrecks spanning about a thousand years of history, are the real revelation. Not only does the museum’s curation place these finds in their fascinating historical context, but they have also done extensive video interviews with the archaeologists who recovered them over the course of thousands of dives.

One of my favorite exhibits partially recreated a small ancient trading ship carrying stores of glassware, which were recovered from the ocean floor and then in many cases painstakingly pieced back together by the archaeology team, who lived for months in a remote camp while working to catalogue the wreck and bring it to the surface. Interviewed years later for a short documentary available as part of the exhibit, you can see the archaeologists tear up as they remember the moment of uncovering gold earring lost for centuries under the ocean, or finding the last missing fragment of shattered glass vessel. A really beautiful and moving exhibit.

A fine example of a contemporary exhibition art in a historical setting. A rich collection of glass objects, amphoras, jewellery and any other tradable merchandise in medieval ages across the Aegean and the Mediterranean Seas. Housed within the Castle of St. Peter and a must see place in Bodrum.

I give it a five because you should absolutely go. This castle is gorgeous and full of neat history. My main criticism is that there is little information on the Knights that built the castle. I’d love to have more history in the castle about the castle. Instead most of the history comes from other locations or from ancient shipwrecks. This is cool but I’d love for them to focus their museum on the place we were.

Museum is definitely worth a visit. You can easily spend 2-3 hours in here alone, not including the surrounding castle.

There is a lot of interesting information on the boards and history of the museum/underwater archaeology generally.
