You can pay and use the tram or horse carriage in roaming the place. Or you can use your car/motorbike going to the sites.

A hidden gem! It's amazing but I wish I could rent a bicycle. Walking is fine though, you can see everything, just go the visitor centre and they'll show you the map and stops. Amazing ruins, history and nature! And all very peaceful, not many people.

Old ancient uncovered ruins of what was the old capital after chiang rai but before chiang Mai, before it was abandoned due to numerous floods. Enter through the main entrance and you will be able to go on a guided tour on a open bus or you can hire a horse guided cart. We opted to walk through the old town and took our time visiting the many ancient ruins and speaking to some of the locals. The museum is definitely worth a visit and holds many ancient artifacts. Friendly staff will be more than happy to show you around. It was very quiet when we visited during the week and was peaceful visiting some the old areas. Helpful placards so you can learn more about the each area.

We took the horse tour with local volunteering guide in the evening. It was a beautiful ride. Due to Covid, there’s no other customer/visitor so the guide was so happy to meet us. According to the story she told me, there should be around 44 temples in total but only ~20-22 of them were found. Calm and peaceful area, people are nice as always.

Not to be missed, if you're interested in Thai history. Surely one of the prime sites to visit in all of Thailand, and certainly in Chiang Mai.

About 20/30 minutes from Chiang Mai city. Find it on your own using a map, or take a taxi.

Best done over a number of visits as there are many individual areas within the overall site. It's best to go to the recently opened museum (opened in 2016 I believe), first to get a good taste of what Wiang Kum Kam has to offer.

We were taken round the museum by a young volunteer with acceptable English, and she was most helpful (so got a good tip!).

The museum is extremely modern and uses the latest technology to get the story across, as well as having rooms of artifacts.

Outside the museum, the guides and volunteers have little English, and there is not much information at the sites either. A shame, but there you are. If you look around after visiting the museum and gleaning information from the internet, you will be as prepared as you can be right now.

I would advise going round the site on your own using a cycle or motorcycle.

Don't miss out on Chedi Liam, a superb stupa built around 1287.

An outstanding area, and thoroughly recommended.

Enjoyed this very much. The museum was closed unfortunately but I took the horse-carriage ride (300 baht for around 45 minute) tour to the ruins and temples. The tour guide was very nice and gave me time at each stop to get out and take pictures. A must see for anyone that wants to know the history of Chiang Mai.

Also known as 'Ruined City', the former capital of the Mon Kingdom. It is very easy to drive straight past on the way to the airport, not realizing it is there. Once inside you can drive around or take a pony and trap. There is a working wat still on site. The abandonment is believed to have been caused by frequent flooding, as happened in 2005.

Truly an amazing 800 Year old ruins that were discovered in the late 20th Century. This area is a must see on any trip to Chiang Mai. The ruins are fairly well preserved and rich with historical and religious significance. Tours are available, by van, bus and also by horse drawn carriage. It is a large area so navigating without a tour guide will assure you that you will miss a lot. There are also many beautiful working temples in Wiang Kum Kam that are worthy of a visit!

The information center has recently been improved and it's amazing.

You can first go into the information center. A super nice tour guide with very good English will take you through 4 rooms showing you a brief historical story of Wiang Kum Kam along with some ancient artifects and 360° video presentation. The tour around the information center is free!

Then, you can go on a horse carriage or a trolley to check out temple ruins in the area. They are tour guides. Our tour guide couldnt speak English but you already learned some stories from the presentation in the information center. It would really be nice if you cant speak Thai. Our 45 mins horse carriage trip costed us 300 THB.

Please know that Wiang Kum Kam is very much an outcome of local affords. Some tip to your local tour guide would be nice. :)

This place is so secluded. Book grab for convenience. When i get there i was a little freaked out as i was the only person in there and no body was looking after the place and give you info so i just started walking around explored.

Beautiful and quiet area where you can ride a carriage in a village. This is much less visited location but well worth seeing.

Recommended to arrive there by tuk tuk or private transport because its a very isolated place. The ruins are spread around the little town, very authentic place, quiet and peaceful. Even tho most of them are ruined worth the visit.
