Thamai Farm & Home Stay

My husband and our two daughters (one coming home from her studies in Atlanta, another from Hamshire in England) stayed at the Tree House at Thamai Farm & Home Stay from 10-11 June. We were very happy with the genuine warm hospitality of our host, Khun Sri.
We called to book our accommodation on 9 June and Khun Sri told us not to bother with putting any down payment, just go and enjoy. And we did.

We were very lucky there were still plenty of juicy and sweet rambutans and mangosteens, but fewer durians (because the durian season started in May and most of the ripen durians had already been picked). This was our first opportunity to take photo with durians while they were still hanging on the tree. We would certainly return to this wonderful place again in the near future and stay longer.

Foods in the nearby market are plentiful and inexpensive. We especially enjoyed the khao-tom pla (fish rice porridge) near the Clock Tower in the morning. At the same place in the evening there is a night market where foods and dessert are really nice. Highly recommended are the raw oyster (to be eaten with cha-om plant for the naturally sweet taste of the plant when combined with raw oyster) and som-tam (papaya salad). The lady som-tam seller took special care about cleanliness and she assured us of the safety of her som-tam. Indeed her som-tam was very tasty and safe.

While at Thamai, do take some time to visit the historic and beautiful catherdral in the provincial seat of Chanthaburi. If you like gems, go there on the weekend when the provincial gem market is open. But don't waste time going to Chao Lao Beach; the place is dirty and uninteresting. There is a Tesco/Lotus supermarket in the provincial seat where you can get everything you need. But the fresh seafoods in there looked awful. Better try looking for live crabs in roadside markets in local communities. One kilo of live crabs is only 200 - 350 Baht, depending on size.

Our only regret was that we couldn't stay longer at Thamai Farm & Home Stay, as we had to leave to continue our family vacation elsewhere.
