วัดขุนคง เดิมเป็นวัดร้างชื่อว่าวัดบ้านหง และต่อมาในยุคพระเจ้ากาวิละ ช่วงยุคเก็บผ้าใส่ซ้าเก็บผ้าใส่เมือง พระองค์ได้นำพวกละว้า จากอำเภอสันป่าตอง มาอยู่ที่หมู่บ้านร้างหมู่บ้านหง โดยมีผู้นำหมู่บ้านคือ ปู่ขุนคง ได้นำชาวบ้านมาพัฒนาสร้างหมู่บ้านขึ้น พร้อมบูรณะวัดร้างบ้านหงและเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น วัดขุนคงหลวง ตามชื่อผู้นำหมู่บ้าน
