Five years later, updated review: We of course went back to Snack Bar California and their lunch is just as good as before!! Can't wait to revisit again in another five years.

This is one of the best lunch places in town that we went to. It's a really authentic place with a lot of local people. Their food is so tasty and the staff is really friendly and attentive. We ended up going here twice in the week we spent on Madeira, and both visits were equally great. If you're looking for a calm place to sit down and have lunch, away from the tourist traps this is the place to go!

Came here in May and once again the free tapas is amazing. Should eat here. 6.40€ for a pint and large wine plus the pork n chips .Popular with locals. Seating outside., standing inside. Hole in floor toilet for boys but Tima and Madge get to sit. Great snack bar.....so yes...we came back to est that evening...yum

Snack-Bar California is a true hidden gem in Funchal, Madeira.
This unassuming little bar is a throwback to the old Madeiran "tascas" where you can enjoy a refreshing Coral beer with a side of "dentinho", a local snack.
The bar is located right next to one of Funchal's most famous poncha bars, but it's still off the beaten path. This makes it a great place to escape the crowds and experience the real Madeira.
One of the must-try dishes at the Snack-Bar California is the picado madeirense. This hearty stew is made with beef, and it's served with fried potatoes.
It's the perfect way to catch your breath after a long stroll on the city.

If you are looking for a real classic old style only for locals... you have come in the right place. The daily Menù offer a lot of combined dishes (big portion) for a cheap price. In fact you will find here more madeirenses than tourist... and that tells everything. The food is simply good.

Delicious authentic Portuguese cafe, highly recommended. Doesnt feel like a tourist trap, most patrons seemed local. You get tons of food for incredibly reasonable prices. Two lunches with drinks and garlic bread came to 15 euro. Try the Portuguese sausage plate. Be aware this cafe is cash only.

Super chilled spot hidden behind a big tourist location. Great service and no attitude. Make sure to get a seat where you can see the other restaurants that arw close by for great people watching. I recommend the local bear Coral and if want aloft drink try Brisa passion fruit.

Excellent home cooked food (lunchtime only) from a bar with outdoor seating that is mainly frequented by locals. Although the advertising board is in Portuguese the waiter speaks good English to tell you what is serving - and the special of the day genuinely does change. Prices reflect the local customers and not the tourists, so meals only €5 to €8 and sandwiches cheaper than that. And you won’t leave hungry!

One of the best ponchas in town. They kindly serve a little snack with their drinks.
