What a stunning place to visit, the colours the smells are amazing. So colourful and vibrant with all the exotic flowers, fruits and vegetables.
There's a large fish market as well which obviously adds to the smell but there such a lot of fish here to buy.
Lots of samples available to taste the exotic fruits which are so unusual
We'll definitely be going back for another visit before we leave the island

Really lovely market with a lot of history, inaugurated in the year 1949. Definitely a must in Funchal!

Interesting layout with a big central patio and two floors. Lots of local produce, colourful fruit and artesanal products or gifts

Lovely little market with flowers fruit and veg on 2 floors and fresh fish on a lower floor. Also a cafe and gift shop. We visited whilst on a one day visit from a cruise ship. Bought some of the local poncha to take home. It was nice to see some of the stallholders in national dress.

A landmark location that's definitely worth a visit. Inside, there are cozy cafes. You can sample fresh local fruits. Plus, it's a great spot to take some beautiful photos.

Very beautiful market. Worth seeing. It is beautifully structured and you can see many varieties of fruit.

It is not cheap. A red banana was 3.5€ and a pineapple banana was 10€ each. Only the pineapple-flavored one was ripe, the red one was still raw.

Compact and split in 2 floors with the fish section separated but inside the same building. For me, interesting the different variety of tropical fruits and vegetables. The fish section (on a Saturday) was not in a full swing but 4/5 parts were working and it was pretty fascinating.

Definitely worth the visit to experience all the colours sounds and smells but I’d never buy from these types of stalls. I didn’t see any locals only tourists which is never a good sign.
We did see lots of fruit we’d not seen before. Worth a visit for that.

If you're shopping for fresh fruit and vegetables then this is an amazing place. It's lovely just to stroll around and see how lovely everything is. There are gorgeous flowers too,and a couple of typical Madeiran cafés.

The market opens at 7am, only open for half a day on Saturday and closed on Sunday. In the market there is opportunity to see them preparing the fish, buy fruit, vegetables, plants, flowers, seeds and herbs. It is displayed over two floors. The stores can change depending on the day of the week. It is colourful. On the top floor there is also a restaurant that is open the same time as the market. The market is used by the locals and you can see them come and go. If you want to purchase something the traders will explain which products are used for what.

📣 Just visited the charming farmer's market here in Madeira! 🌿🍎 Such a delightful experience exploring the stalls and discovering unique souvenirs. And oh, the variety of fruits available there was astonishing—I came across so many delicious ones that I'd never even heard of before! 🍓🍊 A truly memorable visit indeed! 🌸🌞

Colourful market with beautifully displayed fresh fruit and vegetables. A feast for the eyes.
Best to come here on a Friday when the island’s farmers themselves have stalls and sell their own local produce.
For us, visiting on a Thursday, it was a pretty market but it was very touristy too. Prices were expensive and most stalls are aimed at tourists.
The fish market downstairs was fascinating. Small but a good selection of fish etc, with lots of locals shopping.

Explore the charming Farmers Market in Madeira, housed in a characterful old building—it's a must-visit, and the largest market in Funchal. We visited to stock up on tropical fruits for the week, including various passion fruit varieties and deliciously sweet bananas. Witness the dedicated ladies, adorned in traditional attire, maintaining the market's impeccable condition. During our visit, I enjoyed a personalized flower and plant lesson from Anna-Botanica, a knowledgeable florist. Don't miss her family restaurant, Macaranesia, upstairs, where she crafts delectable Madeira cake and cookies. An incredible woman with talents in both floristry and baking, making the market an absolute delight.

Nice place, but a total tourist trap (especially fruit). You can get the same fruit in other local shops min. 2x cheaper. Here it is all overpriced. Example passionfruit from Colombia, farmers market 15 eur/kg, local shop 8 eur/kg, supermarket 6 eur/kg… Enjoy :-)

I enjoyed the experience, plenty to see, and bought some lovely ginger after tasting free samples, free toilet, loads of fruit and herbs, somewhere for food and alcohol if required, well worth a visit.

Must see place in Funchal. Really atmospheric and full of character market. Upstairs has two coffee paces on the outdoor balconies.

It's a wonder place to spend time & alwamy first stop when I'm here (as it's close to bus stops and has bathroom, in the back on top floor).

But please, please, please don't buy passion fruit here for 25 euros a kilo. It's an insane rip off, since you can buy it all over Funchal at small fruit stands or fruit stores for 1/20 the price! Enjoy.

Mercado dos Lavradores is a vibrant market located in the heart ❤ of Funchal. This commercial space, inaugurated on November 1940, serves as a living museum, where the freshness and tropical flavors take center stage. Designed by Edmundo Tavares, the market’s typical Estado Novo architecture reflects its intention to be the primary supply point for the city. You’ll encounter colorful tile panels adorning the façade, main entrance, and fish market. These traditional Azulejo tiles, created in 1940 by João Rodrigues, depict regional themes. Visitors to Madeira should not miss the chance to see this unique market. From fresh fish to exotic flowers and local crafts, the Mercado dos Lavradores offers a delightful experience.

This place is very beautiful, but also very touristic. The real market it’s on Friday, when farmers from all the island come to sell in Funchal city. If you wanna buy vegetables during week day, I recommend the second level at the store ‘Regional’ that has real prices. Be careful with the exotic fruits at the main floor. Some guys asks you taste than sells you fruits for cosmic unreal prices.

This funchal market captivated me, it was full of diverse ingredients, tropical fruits that I have never had the opportunity to taste before. Lots of seafood and fish. The local vendors are willing to give you pieces of fruit to taste so you can choose the right one that tastes the best to you. I was a little uncomfortable with the strength of the push to buy.
