Boca do Risco

Boca do Risco is a large picnic area at the crossing between Vereda do Larano path and Verada da Boca do Risco path. From Cado do Larano parking, you will need 90 minutes. From Machico, it takes around 3 hours.
Boca do Risco can accommodate dozens of hikers. The scenic view towards Ponta de São Lourenço is breathtaking. Be carful during your lunch, because there are at lot of local wasps.

This is a long way out staring in Machico. I suggest starting in Porto da Cruz near the old cable car, coming here and then going back, around 1:30h each side. The views are spectacular and not many tourists around so it feels very relaxing and calm. The path is wide and almost no danger in sight. This part of the island is frequently very windy so a jacket might be needed.

Beautiful viewpoint on the northern side of the island over the ocean. Good place to have a picnic.

Gorgeous hike!! I would recommend booking with a tour company in town for 30 euros. They drop you off at the start, you hike ~10km one way, then they pick you up at the end. Great experience!

Incredible spot for lunch if you re hiking either towards Larano or Machico.

Outstanding landscape. Perfect place to do trekking, the view that you have during the way is something breathless. It may seem that is very narrow, but isn’t. I’m sure you will not regret to walk here.

We stopped here for lunch on our walk from Porto da Cruz to Machico. There is a nice flat patch of grass to relax on, with stunning views all around. A very clean area too, and all the other hikers were very respectful. The sheer size of the cliffs and length of the views are more than enough reason to visit.

This hike is not very popular and I don't know why. View is incredible. Trail is flat and quite easy. But the road to get to the starting point is frightening and really narrow.

One of best hikes in Madeira for views. You will see amazing cats on the way too.. pictures do do justice. Slippery track as it was raining night before when we went.

This viewpoint is along the Vereda do Larano, one of the 3 top veredas of Madeira. You can see from here the topical coasts of the island: very steep, lot of wind and a magnific view of the ocean. If you come before 10, you probably have the time for rest with no other people,but in general this Vereda seems to be very less crowded then others of the island. Then you continue to Portela to finish the Vereda. Absolutely fantastic experience!

Great walk with an amazing view on the cliffs and the sea.
Please note than when we did this hike on 17 January 2024, there was a small landslide that had partly blocked the way between Porto da Cruz and Boca do Risco. We (and other hikers we saw) managed to just go over the landslide to continue on the otherwise well-kept path so it is doable but it certainly is a dangerous obstacle.
This obstacle can surely be unstable and slippery depending on the conditions and if you fall you will surely die. However, the landslide is only approximately 5 meters wide and is the only notable difficulty in this beautiful hike, which is otherwise rather easy.

It is a really nice hike from Porto da Cruz. Not hard around 3h back and forth.

We walked here from Cabo de Larano (old cable car viewpoint). Very beautiful walk next to the cliffs, while still feeling safe. Be aware that there is no sign indicating that you have reached the Boca do Risco viewpoint. From Boca do Risco, you can continue to Machico, altough that was too long for the time we had available.

This route Rom Machico through Boca Risco to Porta da Cruz was magnificent worth to go there even twice 😍

Very nice and pretty easy hike, would definitely recommend to do this one if you visit Madeira. Keep an eye on the falling rocks as we saw a few of them when we went. Parking is small so best to come early.

Very nice views with allmost noone beiing there. Easy trail up never too steep. We took a picknick there
