Caldeirão do Inferno

Sadly the path to Caldeirão do Inferno is still shut 02/09/2023. The walk to the Caldeirão Verde is very much worth doing nonetheless. Walking along the levada, going through the tunnels and views along the way are awesome.

A very fun and interesting hike from caldeirao verde to this waterfall. There are many tunnels to cross, some narrow and short, one with a “waterfall” at the entrance, some with “lookout” into the canyon. There’s also a bridge where you cross the canyon which is kind of cool. Then it was nice to arrive at the waterfall all to ourselves because few people actually make it this far. There is some elevation for the hike tho, but not too tough!

Probably on the best walk on the island.

Bring a raincoat and charge your phone battery for its light... you going to need it.

It starts from the Caldeirao Verde and rapidly to up the mountain with steps. Then, you have to go through some tunnels.

The views are amazing and landscape changing while your are going up go the Caldeirao do Inferno.

Nice hike, sometimes bit challenging do to the hight of the tunnels buoy would cross but the views and waterfalls will be your reward.

Currently closed but worth the time if you are already at end of Levada do Caldeirão Verde. There are some handrails and guiderails missing but nothing serious.
You can see some epic waterfalls and vistas during your trip, and there are basically zero tourists.
Hints & tips:
1. Some reviews mentioned that you can not go further after some point as there is a waterfall in the way. As of the time of writing of this review (2023.06.18) it's not true. There is an easy way around this waterfall, so you can continue your journey ( see photo).
2. After the second waterfall (see photo) there is a 3 way junction on the top, but there is no sign where to continue. Throw the tunnel go right immediately, so you can continue your journey ( See photo).
3. There is a short bit rusty bridge at some point. Step to the 2 sides, not to the middle for your safety. ( see photo).
4. I attached a photo of the last waterfall on this road. So you know that if you don't see this, you are not yet in the end. ;)

We went on a rainy day - the road wasn't as crowded as it usually gets. Unfortunately, we didn't have any views, but on the other hand the mist helped with the vertigo - you couldn't see how deep the valley goes. ;) The Caldeirão do Inferno itself wasn't as spectacular as the rest of the road - the other waterfalls, the gorge and the steep jungle stairs at the end.
The whole trip is supposed to be 17 km - real feel more like 20. :)
It took us 6 hours from Queimadas and back and after several hours, the road turned to one giant muddy puddle.
Sturdy hiking boots are a must, although the road isn't steep, it is difficult. I actually appreciated having my trekking poles with me.

What an amazing place to visit. Just be aware of the small paths, low ceiling tunnels. Stunning views. Paisagem 😍

PR9 Queimadas - Levada do Caldeirão Verde - Levada do Caldeirão do Inferno is total 8.7 km one way.
Levada do Caldeirão Verde - Levada do Caldeirão do Inferno is 2.2 km, stairs with 323 steps and some tunnels. Scenery and waterfalls at the end is worth the extra hike. You don't need to be that fit to make the hike. Phone flashlight is sufficient. Some parts of trail is wet but waterproof clothing was not necessary. Remember to step aside when meeting people and for people trying to pass.

Incredible trek, finishes with amazing waterfalls and canyons. When you arrive at top of the long flight of steps coming from Verde, turn left for walk towards another mountain which is nice but this is not the way to the inferno. At top of steps turn right past no swimming sign, continue on. You can continue past the inferno but where this goes I have no idea! Essential to take hat snd torch as there are a lot of tunnels some with low roof.

This has been one of the nicest walks on Madeira so far. Bring a lamp 🔦

Auch wenn die Wanderung nach der Caldeira Verde nicht direkt mehr ausgeschildert und als geschlossen markiert ist, ist der Weg dennoch problemlos auch als Gelegenheitswanderer begehbar. Zumindest bei gutem Wetter. Wenige Absicherungen sind beschädigt. Daher sollte man keine Höhenangst haben. Trittfestes Schuhwerk ist ein Muss! Tunnel können bei schlechtem Wetter oder viel Regen etwas überflutet sein. Der Weg ist hier das Ziel. Man wird über verwunschene Pfade, einen Treppenaufstieg von 323 Stufen und diverse Tunnel geführt und mit fantastischen Ausblicken, tosenden Wasserfällen und einer einzigartigen Wanderung belohnt. Bei den meisten Tunneln ist Kopf einziehen angesagt!
An der Tunnelkreuzung (siehe Bild) weist ein kleines Schild den richtigen Weg nach rechts. Wenn ihr geradeaus gehen würdet, lauft ihr durch einen 2,5km langen Tunnel an der Levada do Pico Ruivo entlang, der auch möglicherweise nicht komplett passierbar ist!
Insgesamt die schönste Levadawanderung der Insel und ab der Caldeira Verde auch menschenleer. Die Wanderung von gut 17km dauert insgesamt vom Parkplatz in Queimadas 5 Stunden bei zügigem Schritt ohne ggf. Umwege :)

Le 16 août le sentier était encore fermé mais reste praticable surtout par temps clair (voir la photo de la barrière endommagée au début du chemin).

Randonnée magnifique suivant Caldeirao Verde qui alterne levadas, grottes, cascades, vues époustouflantes: c'est un vrai spectacle ! L'arrivée est moins spectaculaire que Caldeirao Verde mais reste très belle.

La principale difficulté ce sont les marches dans la seconde moitié du parcours mais tout est oublié grâce à la vue 😉

Przedłużenie szlaku z Caldeirão Verde. Trasa znacznie bardziej urozmaicona od pierwszej części, choć też bardziej wymagająca - podczas wędrówki zmuszeni będziemy na pokonanie dość stromych i wąskich schodów a także tuneli dłuższych i bardziej mokrych od tych prowadzących do Caldeirão Verde, jednak widoki, które można podziwiać podczas trasy wszystko rekompensują.

Sehr schöne Wanderung, ab dem Caldeirao Verde gibt es auch weniger Touristen und der Weg ist nicht so überlaufen. Auf dem letzten Stück gibt es dann noch ein Paar Treppen und einige Tunnel, bei denen man den Kopf einziehen sollte. ;) Insgesamt ist der Weg hin und zurück ca. 20km., aber an sich ohne viele Höhenmeter daher leicht zu bewältigen.

To już jest rzeczywisty koniec tej trasy i dojście tutaj wymaga już odrobiny wysiłku, o ile pierwsza część trasy jest cała płaska, to tutaj już jest trochę podejść. Wodospad na końcu nie jest jakiś spektakularny, ot kolejny, czyli nie jest to niesamowite zwieńczenie wędrówki, ale widoki i atrakcje po drodze sprawiają że zdecydowanie warto tu dojść. Droga wiedzie przez tunele, nad urwiskami, dosłownie pod wodospadem, przez kopalnię, atrakcji całe mnóstwo. Warto.

Pokračování cesty z Caldeirão Verde. Moc turistů už sem nevyrazí. Po poslední značce “Caldeirão do Inferno 0,9 km” začínají dlouhé strmé schody a chybí značení. Po konci schodů se dejte VPRAVO a po několika tunelech dojdete přes zajímavou tmavou soutěsku s vodopády až do cíle. Když budete mít štěstí a cestou zpět už bude málo turistů, v levadách zahlídnete místní pstruhy.

Superbe rando (un peu longue), mais ça en vaut vraiment la peine. Sans doute ma plus belle rando de Madère. Attention parcours un peu étroit. En cette année de covid-19 il n'y avait personne en plein mois d'Août, mais en temps normal, je présume que les croisements peuvent être difficiles...

Trudniejsza trasa, trochę bardziej niebezpieczna. Dużo tuneli. Polecam mieć lepszą latarkę, te w telefonach są za słabe.
