Miradouro do Pico do Facho

I did the signposted 4km route (anti-clockwise) today and took about 75 minutes to go up and 45 minutes to get back down; starting and finishing just over the road from the beach. There is about 340m climb which means it is quite a slog doing that over a relatively short distance. It starts with a short climb and then you follow the levada which is level. Then you have almost continuous steps up the south side. The steps are quite large in places, and there are a couple of short stretches of metal stairways. (If you were coming down the large steps it would be quite difficult if you didn't have enough strength in your legs or you had weak knees.) The north side climb (or decent in my case) has virtually no steps but is quite a steep slope, and as there had been some light rain, it was quite slippy. (Of course if you want to make it all a lot easier you can drive or catch a taxi to the top!) And the top is well worth it as you get a lovely 360 degree view (from the very top). There are some picnic benches near the top at the end of the toad, with views over Machico and out to sea. You also can see the airport and the planes taking off and landing if they come and go in an easterly direction. It wasn't very busy when I went (Tuesday, 9 January). Enjoyed it!

The viewpoint gives wonderful view of airport and area nearby. If you are lucky and wind right you may see a landing or takeoff. From the top it all looks like robotic model. However, a small golden sand beach and other islands can be seen. Not too difficult to reach. Better to visit in evening for good photography.

Amazing viewpoint of Machico. However, don’t stop at the cell tower. Go up the stairs and then up the trail to the rocks, climb some rocks to get to the highest point to get a pretty nice sunset view.

There is only one downside, it’s full of flying small insecta on the top, really annoying. Bugspray did not help at all.

The view was amazing and you can also see airplanes taking off and landing .

West of machico. View on all the city and up to the airport. Nice and quiet place.

If you’re in Machico you must go up!
Just 4km of trail, medium difficulty.

I suggest you wear hiking shoes,
going up to the top the ground is muddy and you have to be very careful not to slip.
To return to town you can decide, once you reach the top, to go back from the main road, it is about a 45-minute walk.
The view is breathtaking and absolutely worth it but if you suffer from vertigo I would not recommend going up.
Once at the top you will find a small kiosk selling food and drinks. The toilet costs 50 cents if you don't consume anything.

It's such an amazing view of Machico, the airport (with the possibility of watching the planes landing and taking off) and sea. Great area to have a barbecue and spend sometime to appreciate the view.

Great view point to watch landing planes to the Madeira airport. You can see also the runway from here. There should be also a snack truck there (there was when I visited there twice).

Excellent viewpoint. Can grab a bit of delicious madeira cake and a glass of the local brew from the refreshments kiosk and relax as you watch those airplanes come in to land down below!

Gorgeous lookout, easy to access by car, we found parking very close. There even was a snack booth on top and a couple of tables to picnic at.

Only passed through on a tour of part of the island. Town is clean and well signposted. Lovely views from the hills overlooking the town.

Great viewpoint over Machico and Caniçal. You can see some beautiful sunrises here.

A great lookout. There is an alternative path back down some stairs going out the back of the lookout. Warning! We took that path (which has some amazing views), but the track stops near to the bottom. It requires some more adventurous rock climbing to continue (as far as we could see), leading to the abandoned building. I would recommend only following this path a short way (10 mins) to get the views and then turning back for the mule track or the road back down, unless you feel adventurous.
