The church sits above the toboggan rides. There are a number of steps you need to climb to reach the church
The church is free to enter. There are celebrations that take place at the church. If you want to climb to the tower, they ask for a small donation. There are beautiful views across the site. The church is beautiful inside.

Nossa Senhora do Monte Church offers stunning panoramic views of Funchal, making the climb (or cable car ride!) worth it. Right next to it, the traditional wicker toboggans sledge down the hill. Really fun watching or, for the brave, taking the ride.

Small church on the hill. The final resting place of Emperor Charles 1 of Austria. Very close to the Toboggan sled start location. A very fast very adventurous ride. When in Madeira one for the bucket list.

Beautiful church from the outside and inside, and this is also the burial place for Charles I or Karl I (17 August 1887 – 1 April 1922)

He was the last Emperor of Austria and the last King of Hungary that died on Madeira in 1922.

His coffin is inside the church behind a metal gate.

In front of the stairs you can enjoy the view over Funchal city.

A beautiful church and a part of European history: Charles IV’s tomb and a memorial with a small but informative exhibition is here. He was the last Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary and Bohemia who died in exile in Madeira in 1922.

Beautiful old church on top of the hill in monte. Great views to Funchal and the sea. Inside very nice. Well worth the climb up the stairs. Paintings all around. Scenes from the bible. You can light candles in memory of lost ones, inside and outside.

The church of the Hill built in THE 18TH century features a setecentista and oitocentista architecture. In the chapel left side the tomb of Carlos de Habsbourg last emperor of Austria.

The Church of Our Lady of the Hill was built in the séc.XVIII on the foundations of the ermida primitive of séc.XV, by order of Adão Gonçalves, son of Gonçalo Aires Ferreira, squire of Infant and settler of the island. Then by requirement of the cult and increased number of believers, the church was extended. In 1748 a earthquake left the church destroyed and rebuilt 1818.
On the altar - major the image of Our Lady of the Hill, revered since the early days of the population of the island of Wood.

In the side chapel of this church the tomb of Carlos Habsburgo is found, Emperor of Austria, Hungary and the Bohemian, exiled in 1921 in Wood. Inside the church you can also enjoy beautiful parts of goldsmithery ploughed of sécs.XVII 18th CENTURY.
On 15th of August the day of Our Lady of the Hill is celebrated, patron of the Diocese and the city of Funchal

As a Czech traveller, how could I have missed the place of final rest of the last Czech king (and Austrian emperor) Charles I. Lovely small catholic church with a stunning view over the Funchal and wide Atlantic below. As good a place as any for the final epizode of a dynasty influencing Europe and the world for over five centuries.

The Church of Our Lady of Monte is the main church in the Freguesia (Parish in English) of Monte (Funchal), Madeira. In 1470 a chapel (dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Encarnação) was built on this site by Adão Gonçalves Ferreira, the first man born in Madeira.

On 10 June 1741, the first stone of the current Church dedicated to Our Lady of Monte was laid. A few months after the church was completed, the Church was seriously affected by an earthquake on 31 March 1748. It was rebuilt and on 20 December 1818 the Church was finally consecrated by the Archbishop of Meliapor and administrator of the Diocese D. Frei Joaquim de Meneses e Ataíde.

The Blessed Emperor Charles I of Austria died in exile on Madeira and was laid to rest in the church.

The Assumption of Mary was first celebrated on 15 August 1551 and is one of the biggest arraial's (street party in English) still celebrated today on the grounds of the church, where fires are made by locals and local food is made such as Espetada, Bolo do caco, and Bacalhau

If you want to get to know the heart and soul of the beautiful Funchal, the capital of Madeira, you must go to the old district of Monte. Monte is a civil parish in the municipality of Funchal. You will see winding, picturesque, tight and very steep but charming narrow streets. Cafes and bars. Old houses that remember the 19th century. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte towers over the Funchal city. In the side chapel of Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, there is the tomb of Charles Habsburg, Emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It's a beautiful place. Panoramic view of the whole city, harbour and ocean. I recommend the unique historical atmosphere of this district of Funchal. I visited in May 2022.

Post scriptum - below the church next to the Monte toboggan station there is a free public toilet.
