Viseu Cathedral

The cathedral of the city is simply called Sé — in Portuguese, this word means simply “cathedral". The patron saint of Viseu is the first Portuguese Saint Festonius, who was born in these places. Built in the 12th century on the site of an older church, it was subsequently rebuilt several times. Manueline, Gothic, and Baroque styles are mixed in its architecture. In the 17th century, blue and white azuleju tiles appeared on the walls. It looks quite unusual... azuleju - in the cathedral. Be sure to visit the museum. The price is only 2 euros, but there is something to see, and the views from above are excellent.

This should be a UNESCO site. In Portugal it's somewhat rare to find a cathedral that wasn't completely "renovated" in the 40s to give it an austere Norman neo-gothic appearance but this cathedral seems to have a lot more random period features than some other cathedrals I've seen. Even more so it's incredible to see it on top of the Roman forum. The cloister is very unusual. There is a Fantastic museum full of incredible objects including an 18th c organ, medieval books, reliquaries, and statues. The cathedra museuml is very incredible and well worth the 2 euros to visit. They are working on it right now so there will be some noise but it didn't interfere.

Beautiful and ancient cathedral! Lot's of history and a nice museum with Catholic art and relics. From upstairs there is a nice view of the city and also a view of the other church directly across the plaza.

Fantastic cathedral to visit. You can visit the ground floor for free and for 2 euros you can go upstair and visit the museum of the city. The museum is filled with religious reliques and a beautiful view on the city of Viseu. In front of the cathedral there is another church and another museum that's worth your time. Highly recommended!

Beautiful historic square with splendid views across Viseu. I did not go inside, but it looked interesting.

Cathedral located in the heart of the city of Viseu, whose construction dates back to the 12th century. It is surrounded by pedestrian squares and small restaurants with beautiful terraces, where you can eat typical Portuguese cuisine.
