I was today at this hiking path and I loved it! Yeah it is true what the others are saying, it is a little bit dangerous - But all hiking paths are dangerous when you don't put any attention on the path!
very important -> don't go there when there are strong winds or thunderstorms! (but that should be clear to every hiker)
I can only recommend this route. We went with the bus line 29 up the hill and went the whole hiking path down. :)

We got the bus up to Babosas and went into the palace gardens before walking down. Lots of steps down but fantastic views along the way. One of the quieter walks - we only met a couple of walkers along the way. Since doing the walk we have heard about it being closed at some point last year, but we saw nothing suggesting it is now.

Good trail to walk from Monte palace garden back to Funchal. We didn't have hiking boots on, because it was our relax day. But I wouldn't advise taking this trail if you have flip flops on, regular sneakers would be fine.
In some places you need to be a bit more careful, because it may be slippery or you can lose grip.
We took the trail on a sunny day, the trail wasn't wet. Maybe if it's raining it is more dangerous.

This is a great hike. Super challenging going up but pretty fun going down. Some great views, very peaceful. Only a few little waterfalls but you can hear the water running for most of the hike.

We took the teleférico up and did this hike all the way back to Funchal. Approx 5.3km.

I have done this path today. From reading the comments, I was expecting it to be in terrible condition, but it was fine. There were some sketchy parts, but overall, it was good. Don't go on very windy or rainy weather.

Easy to walk down if you're knees are OK. There's a lot of steps but the views are worth it.

Not sure why people say its dangerous. It's not dangerous at all and the path is very easy and clear. There are quite a bit of steps and it looks a bit dry, but definitely better then the cable car.

Great hiking trail with great views. A lot of stairs, surface uneven and few fencing, high cliffs, so you have to watch your steps and be pretty fit to do it. I wouldn't recommend doing it during the rain, esp part with levada since this part is mostly exposed to elements, and rock surface will get slippery.

Easy enought walking trail. USE common sense and stick to the paths. Great views and some wildlife along the way. This is not dangerous, if you don't have good mobility then stay away! I walked from bottom to top and can't wait to walk more levada!

Ride the cable car up. Hike the trail down to the Botanical Gardens. Ride the Botanical Garden cable car back to the top. Ride the sled back down. Now, it’s dinner time.

Start at the botanical garden for great views of miserable tourists who decided to start at the bottom.
