So much fun ! Loved taking part in a historical activity that is also different and fun. The toboggans are perfectly safe the the Carreiros make it an even better experience. A must do in Funchal! Go as early as possible to avoid the long lines especially when cruise ships are in port. We only waited 20 minutes,

The "Carreiros" are the men who lead the most picturesque mean of transportation on Madeira Island.

The Monte Sledges are made of wicker and mounted on two wooden runners. They are traditionally handcrafted by skilled craftsmen and master carpenters, experts in the hand wicker-making technique from the mid 1800 in a classic, artisanal method and using the finest local wicker and wood to ensure that a high standard of quality is applied to each Sledge.

The Toboggans Sledges are powered by two sledge drivers called “Carreiros”, dressed in white and wearing the typical hats known as "Straw boaters", also they use rubber soled boots, so that they are able to stop the sledge when necessary by making use of their boots as brakes. The trust and expertise of these people, have contributed to great recognition by the country and the tourists.

The Monte Toboggans Sledges first originated in the early 19th century when they were used as first means of "downhill" public transportation by the local residents who wanted to travel quickly from the village of Monte to the city of Funchal.

The last time we came to Madeira we didn’t do this ride, so we wanted to try it this time. Whilst we had a bit of a queue to get on, it was worth the wait !
We had great fun, but at the end of the ride we decided to walk the rest of the way back into town (even though there were taxis waiting to take you from the end point). In fairness we all wished we’d take the taxi option, as whilst it doesn’t look a long way, it is a hard walk, even though it’s all down hill. So before you decide to walk, think carefully ….

A must do attraction while visiting Funchal. It was fun going down the narrow streets with the “drivers” controlling the toboggans. It was worth the price we paid, though we still tipped them at the end of the run.

An experience I will never forget. Truly unique. It was a thrill and the best thing I have done in Funchal so far. Smiling all the way. Not cheap, it cost 35 Euros for 2 people but it was... Brilliant!

I went with my gut and agreed to do this touristy stuff because…why not!?

CASH ONLY

This is a very different experience; Imagine hopping in a basket sleigh and riding down the steep roads of Madeira! There was no wait and it was at least partially exhilarating, partially hilarious, and overall a fun time.

If you’re a tourist doing tourist things, ride the cable car up from Funchal, check out the palace gardens, and take the toboggan down.

Very interesting experience. It is cash only and the queue can be long because they have to bring the tobogan back up along with the drivers. I would recommend it as although it is a tourist attraction it is a piece of their history too. It lasts around ten minutes and it doesn't go fast.

Expensive? Yes, but is it something totally unique? Yes, so it's definitely worth experiencing.
Thrilling and fun.

My experience with the Carros de Cesto dos Carreiros do Monte was quite pleasant(fantastic).
This is without a doubt one of Madeira's most iconic attractions and i were looking forward to experiencing it. I chose to go up with the cable car(teleferico) and then go to the tropical garden and then down with baskets and that seemed like the right choice.
On the way down the photographer takes pictures that you can buy after the trip (€10).
Tickets prices:
1 person: €27.50
2 persons: €35
3 persons: €52.50
The total distance is 2 km.
I have all the respect for the men who serve and drive the basket!!
An experience I can never forget!!

I highly recommend this entertainment. People have been riding these sleds for over a hundred years. A perfect way to catch a breeze on a warm day.

We planned ahead and arrived early on a day with no cruise ships. We got straight onto a toboggan with no queue at all. They took our card payment even though it said they didn't! The ride was great fun, quite fast enough for us, and although it us quite expensive it was a real experience. We weren't pressured into buying their photo but it was good so we did. Then we waited at the bus stop and took the bus back to town for less than 2€ each, rather than pay 15€ for a taxi.

The Wicker basket car ride is a must do. It’s such a traditional old style chic way to get down a hill. What a fantastic experience and I love they were the traditional outfits which is so important in keeping up with this tradition, especially love the boater hats they wear.
In addition: Two things you have to experience in Madeira:
1. Wicker Basket Ride
2. Traditional Madeirense folklore dancing.

So much fun! Worth the trip up the hill. Get there early or expect a big queue. We managed to walk straight on around 9am, but later in the day the queue was over 1 1/2 hours!!

One hour queue at 1pm on a Monday, however, would still recommend as a must do. €35 for 2 people and it lasts ten minutes/2km

The unique Madeira experience. Try and get there early to beat the queues. They take Visa/Mastercard cards but not Multibanco cards and not expensive for the fun trip down. The souvenir photos also not expensive. Steep but fairly
easy walk back to Funchal centre from the end location.

Worth the investment, this is such a unique experience and so fun in general, it is incredible how they manage the kart and we felt safe all the time. Beware from where they stop in the end there is still a long way down to the city center.
