Capelinhos Volcano Interpretation Center

The visit to the interpretation center of Capelinhos Volcano is very rewarding both for scientific information as well as travel sightseeing. You learn a lot about volcanoes in general as well as for the particular volcano and his eruption in 1958, the most recent in the Azores. Part of this top museumof Faial is built underground so to keep intact the landscape. Climb the stairs to the top of the old lighthouse to enjoy the views and understand the impact of the eruption that partially burried it.

🌋 Best museum in the island! Old light house was cover by the ashes of the volcano. They rebuilt the old tower and did a museum underground. You can go up the lighthouse for the great views and visit the museum. 🆕 Some parts of the museum have been recently renovated

This is a cool museum/ movie/ lighthouse visit all in one. The museum rambles through a labyrinth of underground rooms and is very modern and cool. The movie incorporated great lamps and fans to highlight different got and cool sections, something new for me.

The lighthouse itself was neat, too. Lots of steps, though.

The educational center has interactive videos, a model of the earth on which you can remove the oceans to view the tectonic plates and volcanos. Examples of the various types of volcanic rocks and crystals. You can view the original film taken when the volcano erupted between 1957-58. Or see the time lapse video of how the Azores Island came to be over the course of two million years.
The best surprise was the movie..an experience in itself...
Recommend for everyone.
The building is an architectural marvel.

The museum/interpretation center tells the story of how volcanoes shaped our earth and especially about the Azores' history.

It has a lot of different rocks and it is very educational.

It has a small theatre where they show an educational movie about the creation of earth.

The only downside is that the hologram did not really work like a hologram should.

I would highly recommend to visit this place if you are visiting the Azores.

Amazing... Very interesting geological formation and very well explained...loved the movie in the theatre room... Not that great for small children as it is more focused on older children and adults.

Amazing views, you can go up the lighthouse as well, but prepare your legs...and up the hill..we did it all!!! 😊

Very nice museum. Here you can find out everything about Capelinhos eruption and its effect for living on the Faial.
Also some information about other vulaconoes. Lightouse next to museum is awesome, go to the top and admire how nature changed island's landscape.
Convenient, free car park close to museum.

Great architecture and very informative to learn about the vulcano, the 1958 eruption and vulcanism in general. Well worth a visit. Includes a cafeteria to relax after walking the site. Entrance fee serves as admission to the light house, too.

This Interpretation Centre explains the story of the Capelinhos Volcano which erupted during 1957/58 near the shore in the ocean. The ticket includes the visit to the museum and the lighthouse with nice views over the volcano landscape.
Outside the museum you can also climb the small hills for really nice views over the sorronding area and see the mixture of the green island landscape with the volcano and the ocean.

A very important site about Capelinhos volcano. Nicely organized and very educational.

The most unique place in all of Faial. Black Sand Hills with Lighthouse at the Edge. There's a museum about the Vulcano of Capelinhos which is also an amazing experience.
