Lighthouse of Ponta dos Capelinhos

This is a must do when visiting Faial. Very interesting and the facility is a work of art - an underground bunker! Watch the film about the volcano in your language if possible. Very fun and informative. The outside is eerie and beautiful and surreal. Feels like you are looking at the moon.

The lighthouse offers a spectacular view on the ocean and the surrounding landscapes. Nearby there is also a small mountain where you can walk up and see the never ending ocean and a very uncommon plateaus.

Fascinating place to visit. Walk to the top of the half buried lighthouse. Museum is a great learning experience

We had a great experience here. Really interesting museum in both English and Portuguese. The lighthouse was a great climb up. What a view of the newest part of the island!

A truly great experience, the remains of the 1957 eruption against the majestic backdrop of the ocean is amazing , very windy and sand is flying all over , but thus us truly one if a kind experience, there is a a great exhibition documenting the travesty

An absolutely fantastic area. In the top 3 places of my 2 weeks in the Azores. An entire extension to the island formed in 1957. The views, colours and landscapes are breathtaking. Parking available and there are refreshments and toilets in the Interpretation Centre. There is a charge to climb the lighthouse itself (this is included in the ticket for the tour of the Interpretation Centre), though walking around the area is free. Walking on the newly formed island is allowed for guided parties only so booking is needed - I didn't book as I didn't know and regretted it, I would have loved to do that. I'd recommend the Interpretation Centre first to give some context to the surroundings. Walking up the ridge of the old cliff tops and looking over the new land and the changes to the original island is amazing. Take your swimming stuff as it's dry and dusty to walk around and there's a lovely swimming area in the sea. Highly recommended.

Dramatic history. Volcano ffrom 1957. Perfect UNESCO place. Exhibition 10+!!!

A very impressive place! The history of the place is interesting and the views are incredible! A contrast to all the greenery around.

This place got its own history with the last volcanic eruption in 1957. In that area you can also find houses that were damaged after the eruption of the volcano so you can only see their rooftop parts.

Definitely come twice: light us totally different during day when you can visit the museum (has a cafe) and sunset when museum and cafe closed. Best place to see sunset is at bathing area by the water

Awesome to see in person. Can't even imagine a volcano erupting for 13 straight months.
Be careful as the wind whips up sand and pelts you. It stings.

❗ 1€ ONLY lighthouse entry. Lots of stairs, but wonderful view. Lady from the interpretation center told us it is 13€... she did not explain this was for the centre, lighthouse and exhibitions

Everything is amazing, but get there 90 minutes before closing at least!

Must visit on Faial. Spectacular view and really good museum as well!

This place is quite a contrast to the rest of the island.

The lighthouse in itself is not very interesting, but the view on the 'new island' made after the 1958 eruption is impressive. Combined with the museum it is a truly unique experience. There is ample parking space, but you can also hike there.

Iconic, eerie but unmissable spot when exploring Faial, one of the few remaining structures in Capelinhos that wasn’t engulfed by the ash and dust of the ‘58 eruption - with ground level now around the first storey.

Awesome site. Sunset from nearby "Porto do Comprido" is also beautiful and has a great view to Lighthouse.

It was excellent and informative about the islands and their formation .
