This is where you go for last minute tickets to Machu Picchu as of 10/2023. I took the earliest train into Aguas Calientes from Cusco which meant I arrived at around 7:15am, I headed straight for the Ministry of Culture to get in line and after about an hour and a half I received my number and was told to return at 2:30pm. I went about my day and returned early to make sure I didn’t lose my spot. At about 2:30pm a lady came out and lined us all up to go in according to the number we received earlier in the day. After about another hour and a half I made it to the ticket window and got my ticket for 6am the next day, exactly what I wanted.
I forgot that there is a kicking trail to Machu Picchu and ended up buying a round trip bus pass to the entrance immediately after getting my ticket. Patience is required but you can easily get an entrance to Machu Picchu, you just have to be ready to wait in line for a while.

Great views. Definitely worth the visit.
As for getting there, expect several hours of transport by bus and train, which can also be uite expensive.
If you want the best photo opportunity without loads of other tourists, you need to get there for 6am opening.

Yesterday:
*9:45 PM Our 7PM train from Cuzco was delayed (Peru Rail), so we got there later than expected. We thought we'd give it a shot anyway to see if they had tickets for the next day, but there was only 1 ticket left for Circuit 1 or 2. We were told to come back at 6 AM the next day.

Today:
*5:45 AM: Stood in a small line of 10-20 people (and a few street dogs) outside the building. Only two more joined the line after us.
*6:09 AM: Showed our passports and were given paper slips with our group numbers (25 and 26). The time we were expected to come back (2:30 PM) was written on the slip.

We spent the morning at the Mariposario and at the Museo Sitio/Botanical garden. We were able to get into the Museum by showing our slips and passport.

*2:00 PM: Got back to the plaza and got some alfajores at a nearby cafe. There were many people waiting in the plaza, but there were still benches free. It was also raining on and off, so bring an umbrella or rain jacket!
*2:30 PM: A man with a megaphone started directing everyone in Spanish. He said only people with the numbers 1-200 should be there, and he started calling numbers. When ours were called, we showed our slip, went inside upstairs and waited in line. There were plenty of chairs provided.
*3:00 PM: They began selling tickets. The line went very quickly. You are expected to have cash (152 soles/adult), your passport, and know what time/circuit you want.
*3:15 PM Got out with our tickets! (Circuit 1/2 for tomorrow at 9 AM)

Overall, I was expecting much worse waiting times and I'm very happy we were able to get our last minute tickets quickly. It seems like they've put a lot of thought into how to make the process go smoothly.

It's always better to buy tickets in advance but we rushed from the train and got there when there was barely a line, we waited maybe 10 minutes and got the tickets! If you weren't able to purchase beforehand don't fret it's definitely possible to get there if it's not a busy season
