It's truly a testament of the art and architecture. Beyond that, the temple is an important structure and brings the local community and the tourists together, making everyone a part of the history. It's even more beautiful at night, when the warm yellow lights highlight it's carvings and you are left entranced. As a bonus, you can drink tea from one of the teashops nearby.

The temple's history dates back to the 15th century during the reign of King Yaksha Malla. It was built in 1427 AD by King Yaksha Malla himself, making it one of the oldest structures in Bhaktapur.
The temple is a fine example of traditional Newari pagoda-style architecture. It features intricate woodcarvings, especially on its struts, tympanum, and windows. The carvings depict various deities, mythical creatures, and scenes from Hindu mythology.
Dedicated to Lord Dattatreya, the temple holds religious and cultural importance. Dattatreya is revered as a combined form of the Hindu trinity—Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. The temple serves as a place of worship and pilgrimage for devotees.
The temple, like many historical structures in Nepal, faced damage during earthquakes, notably the devastating one in 2015. Subsequent restoration efforts aimed to preserve its cultural and architectural heritage.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square, where the Dattatraya Temple is located, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The square showcases several temples, palaces, and courtyards, reflecting the medieval art and architecture of the Kathmandu Valley.

Visually, this temple is located in the eastern section of Dattatraya Square, also known as Tachapal Tole, where visitors may observe the activity of the worshippers, the street markets, and young people chatting over tea in the evening. Additionally, the devotees create a holy atmosphere by placing their chairs beneath the temple's pedestals. Bhaktapur, one of the three historic kingdoms of the Kathmandu Valley, is home to terracotta and wood-carved monuments, palaces and temples, as well as open-air courtyards and elaborately-carved buildings. One of these courtyards is Dattatreya Square. The region is home to a large number of historical landmarks and was the seat of royalty until around the 15th century.

One of the beautiful masterpeice of Nepali arts & culture, located in eastern part of old culturally rich city of Bhaktapur that no one should miss to visit. Road leading to Dattatraya Square was beautifully stone paved. Main temple was built in pagoda style. Huge stone pillar with Garuda the Bahan of lord Vishnu along with a Conch & Chakra were there. Temple was devoted to three ultimate supreme gods Bramha, Vishnu & Maheswor !

Dattatraya is located in Tachapal Tol. Tachapal Tol grew up around the ancient cross-roads between India and Tibet and is the oldest part of Bhaktapur. Tachapa or chapara, means the big rest house. And
probably gets its name from the Dattatraya temple. Once a year during the month of February, the temple becomes a 'big rest house' for a benign invasion consisting of thousands of pilgrims from all over
Nepal and some parts of India. They descend upon the Square to celebrate Shiva Rattri a night long festival celebrating Shiva.

The main structure in the square is the Dattatraya Temple. The god dattatraya is a three-headed combination of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, with Vishnu predominating in the Trinity—thus his symbols of the conch, the wheel and Garuda mounted on stone pillars in front of the temple.

The Buddhists, not to be left out, consider Dattatraya to be Devadatta, a cousin of the Buddha, and they also come to worship
here. The temple itself was originally a `big rest house; for pilgrims. But in 1427 A.D., it was turned into a temple, and has been rebuilt many times since. The three-story temple is raised well above the ground on its base, around which are some carved erotic scenes. The painted doll-like image peering out an upper window is not Dattatraya but Indra, and, interestingly no one is quite sure why it is there.

The front section, which was a later addition stands almost separate.

Part of the three ancient kingdoms of Kathmandu Valley, Bhaktapur is filled with monuments made from terracotta and carved wood columns along with palaces and temples decked with elaborate carvings, gilded roofs and open courtyards. The Dattatreya Square is one such courtyard. The seat of royalty until the 15th century or so, the area is home to a great number of historic monuments including maths (residential mansions), temples and a museum. Constructed by King Yaksha Malla in 1428, the three storey Dattatreya Temple is the main attraction of this square. Dedicated to the Dattatreya, a blending of the Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, the temple is the oldest shrine in Bhaktapur. Believed to be built out of a trunk of a single tree, the temple has a nine-step ladder that ascends to the main door flanked by figures of Bhima (a mythological character) with a huge mace sculpted in the Rajput style. Some argue that the two large figures are sculptures of Jaiput wrestlers called Jaimala and Pata. The uniqueness of the temple is in its artistic woodcarvings which are also famous for its relief panels of erotic decorations on the outer wall.

Dattatreya Temple in Dattatreya Square, dedicated to a three-headed combination of the Hindu deities Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. It is well worth a visit to Bhaktapur to see beautifully crafted historical building which was apparently built by King Yaksha Malla in 1427. Thank goodness it remained standing after the 2015 earthquakes which destroyed many of the beautiful old buildings in Bhaktapur.

The temple is dedicated to Dattatreya, a curious hybrid deity, blending elements of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva.
The temple was built on 1428 AD. The Dattatraya Square is regarded as the oldest square of the Kathmandu valley.
The temple is a must visit site if you have come to Bhaktapur Durbar Square. The temple is believed to have been made from a single timber stem.

Malla dynasty's one the best temple. This temple was built by a single tree as I have known from the community people.

Just beside the temple there is a tea and coffee shop where you can have special drink and enjoy the view.
