Friese Bread and Pastry Bakery Us Bertus

I discovered Us Bertus through my Australian friend, who had been a fellow at KITLV. My interest in my heritage was piqued when I spotted a Frisian flag in Leiden, as my great-grandmother was a strong Frisian woman. That initial visit led me to return time and again, as it feels like reminiscent of comforting bread.

My absolute favourite is their Rabarber cake, which never fails to lift my spirits. Whenever I'm feeling down or a bit gloomy, if it’s possible, I make my way to Us Bertus for a slice of Rabarber cake. It's exceptionally velvety, dissolving in my mouth, and notably less sweet compared to many Dutch cakes.

I wholeheartedly recommend that you all experience the delight of their Rabarber cake!

Cosy and little bakery with a lots of tasty pastries and breads!

Quaint cosy Frisland bakery in the vicinity of Hortus Botanicus and Leiden Uni. It's jam packed during lunch hour so it's best to drop by before or after.

The fresh made sandwiches are delicious! This is my favourite go to for something quick. Tried many things but my favourite is the tuna, egg mayo and kip sate. The wheatgrain buns are very filling but I always opted for the white bread.

Lovely bakery in the center of Leiden. I went there because I wanted to eat a croissant and I could resist to buy other pastries, they all looked beautiful (and tasted great)! Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere. I will surely visit again!

I buy sandwiches and pastries from this bakery several times a week. The sandwiches are about three or four euros, and well worth it. They bake great bread and stuff the sandwiches with quality cheeses. I really like their various cakes and pastries, too. The staff are cheerful! Expect a lineup if you go around noon (Leiden University staff love this bakery!)

The best pain au chocolat I've ever had. And the rhubarb cake is amazing too. Would recommend this bakery to anyone visiting Leiden.

This is by far my favorite place in Leiden, and the most special of all bakeries I’ve ever had the pleasure of walking into.

I was in Leiden from the 3rd to the 8th of November, went back home for 19 days, came back on the 27th of November until the 3rd of December, and if one was to ask me about the highlight of my trip? I would simply conclude without even thinking for a fraction of a second, that it was this beautiful bakery, with its great bread and sandwiches, and most of all; the wonderful people who work here. I mean really wonderfully friendly people who never forget your face, and who you must fight with to be able to give a five euro tip. Don’t even get me started with the amazing owner who insists on giving me free bread out of our mutual love and admiration for bread.

A true gem, 10/10.

Frisian baker. Small, friendly, nice selection, perfect location. But wait. The best ever source of Frisian Sugar bread - the ultimate sugary bread ever. Melted sugar cubes, a functional smidgen of cinamon, slightly sticky... this bread with a liberal smear of butter will send you into a spasm of delight.
Don't take my word for it.

When the Frysian sugar bread was sold out, they called the other Frysian bakery to save me a bike ride there. Very popular among uni students and staff around lunch time.

Wat een prachtige zaak in Leiden aan de Groenhazengracht!! De Oranjekoeken en de grote Krentenbollen,zalig!!!!!!

Wij zijn hier al jaren vaste klant dus het wordt tijd voor dank en waardering in de vorm van een eerlijke review.
Het brood is in deze winkel echt van hoogstaande kwaliteit. Zelfs als je het een paar weken in de vriezer bewaart en rustig ontdooit is de kwaliteit nog steeds goed. De friese pof is ook zeer de moeite waard, Dat is een soort platte krentebol gevuld met spijs. Wij kunnen deze bakker aan iedereen aanraden als je gesteld bent op super kwaliteit ''Fries'' Brood.
