A must visit if you are near the capital. UNESCO heritage protected. Traditional kings building next to more modern (18c) queens palace. Still favourite with the followers of the old traditional religion where one wants to talk to ancestors and offer a sacrifice! Amazing experience. The entry gate to the sacred hill is worth a visit too

A surprisingly simple Palace, in tact from before the French Colonozation and thankfully kept. UNESCO sites are always great. No pics allowed inside buildings

It is a UNESCO world heritage. It is the king's palace from 1800s and has queen's summer house from 1900s. The summer house has gifts from different countries such as mirrors from Queen Victoria of England, french cristal ware and wallpaper from Japan. The ticket for foreigners costs 10000 and for local costs 400. I recommend visiting the place with a guide as there are not many written explanation. Has nice panoramik view at the top.

A major step in Madagascar's History. Nicely preserved.
Would deserve a full reconstitution [live performance maybe?] and an historian to develop the landmark history
Be prepared to pay restrooms...

Very unique place although not fully developed for tourism, and the 23 km from our hotel in Tana took us 1.5 hours each way

I recommend a visit here to the country palace of the Marina king. It is a haven of peace outside of Tana. The buildings are interesting and they hold some artifacts and furnishings. The guide tells interesting history. There are also tombs of king and queens. The end gives you a fantastic view of the countryside. It was well worth the trip.

Great for a short hiking up the sacred hill on top of which stand the original royal palace/hut of the most respected of the Merina kings. Near the palace there is a rock formation that offers a panoramic view of the city of Antananarivo. Beautiful place to see.

This is a sacred place for the Malagasy people. It was the first residence of the first king of Madagascar Andrianaporimerina. His residence was the black hut in the middle of the fort. The residence was then enhanced by the successive monarchs.

Considered one of the country’s most sacred spots by the Malagasy people for 500 years, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is a historical village that was once home to Madagascar royalty. The wall that surrounds the village was made in 1847 and was constructed with a mortar made of lime and egg whites. The Mahandrihono compound includes the former home of King Andrianampoinimerina, with walls made of solid rosewood, and artifacts of the island’s great king, including drums, weapons and talismans.

The place where Andrianampoinimerina settled, this was the great king from who came the idea of reuniting the Merina first, and the Malagasy after to have one land, one people.
