One of the oldest shrines in Sri Lanka. This small Catholic church is made up of a simple wooden structure on the sides and on the sandy floor.

Built in the 1920 s by a French priest, Ferdinand Thiri, whose tomb is here, this place of worship has been receiving many pilgrims since 1947. At that time, serious skin disease affected the inhabitants of the region. A mother whose son was affected by this disease had a vision at the foot of the cross. She lava the feet of Christ and then sith her sick child in the same water. The next day, it was cured. Since then, Buddhist, Hindu and Catholic believers have continuously affluent. Outside the offices, and especially on Friday, the th metres separating the entrance of the altar are driven by the consecrated on their knees. Every 14 September, day of the Holy Cross, it is estimated at 150 000 the number of pilgrims who pray before the statue of Christ

A beautiful peaceful place located in Marawila area, Chilaw. Commonly known by locals as the "kurusa palliya". The Church of the Holy Cross, located just a few meters from the Marawila beach, is a picture of serenity where one can spend hours of solitude. This church is a very sacred place for Catholics in Sri Lanka and it is also a miraculous church. ⛪⛪⛪...

The Holy Cross Shrine, called " Kurusa Palliya " in Sinhala or " Holy Cross National Shrine " in English, was built in the 1920s by a French priest, Ferdinand Thiri, whose grave is here. This place of worship receives since 1947 many pilgrims. Next to the cemetery, which is almost an integral part of the place, the small Catholic church consists of the tomb of the priest Thiri, with an altar and a statue of Christ, surrounded by a simple wooden frame topped with a cross. This structure is open on the sides and has a sandy floor.

At the time, a serious skin disease was affecting the people of the area. A mother whose son was afflicted with this disease had a vision at the foot of the cross. She washed the feet of Christ and then bathed her sick child in the same water. The next day, the child was healed and she spread the news to the community. Since then, Buddhist, Hindu, and Catholic believers have come to believe in the miraculous healing powers of the Holy Cross and have flocked to the site. Outside of services, especially on Fridays, the twenty meters or so that separate the entrance from the altar are walked by devotees on their knees. Every September 14, the day of the Holy Cross, an estimated 150,000 pilgrims flock to the statue of Christ. Along with the Church of St. Anne of Talawilla, it is one of the great places of Catholic pilgrimage in the country.

Sacred church. You should experience the blessings. It's famous among locals as kurusa palliya (කුරුස පල්ලිය)

As of 27th August
Parking is available on the beach. For a car, it's LKR 100, bor bikes & three wheelers. it's LKR 50.
There is a religious item shop in the church where you can buy candles, rosaries & other religious stuff.
Washroom facilities are there in the church.
Nice & Clean Beach is also there, but as far as I know, this beach is not safe to swim.

The Holy Cross Shrine was constructed in the 1920s by Ferdinand Thiri, a French priest whose grave is located here. One of the famous church in Sri Lanka among Catholics.
You can spend some quite, calm, peace quality time here with your prayers and loved ones. This was my second time. Even I had the same experience. So if you are a catholic, go and spend some time with God. And take some blessings for yourself.
Some people used to visit here while on their way to Thalawila.

And there is a beautiful beach. Enjoy and Don't pollute the beach.
