Beautiful large, elegant facilities. Food was delicious. Our rooms were large, traditional Japanese style, we loved it. They also have non-Japanese rooms. Great location near everything. Friendly staff and service. Wildly exceeded expectations. Highly recommend !! :)

Absolutely amazing experience. The food (dinner and breakfast) was divine and the onsen within the ryokan was excellent.
The surrounding township is also extremely fun to explore with great restaurants and fun sites to see.
Tip: make sure you are hungry for the dinner service as it is a big multi course meal. Breakfast is also quite large.
Note: onsens are separated by gender and rotate daily so you get to experience both of them during a one night stay if you go in the evening and again in the morning. You can also only realistically stay in the baths for 20-30min before they get too hot.

Very nice ryokan and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Staff are very hospitable and service is top notch. There is pickup and send off from/to the bus station. The hotel is very well kept and some parts looks newly renovated and above all kept extremely clean. Our room on the first floor faces a lovely stone garden and water pond. There are 3 onsens which were very nice but the temperature is on the hot side. Meals are kaiseki style which was exquisitely and beautifully presented and of high quality. Will definitely come back to stay again.

Excellent service, excellent food, excellent location ! Easy walking to all attractions from the hotel.

They provide not only towel, tooth brush, shampoo but also face cleansing and moisturizer in both onsen inside the hotel and also guest rooms.

Communication with staff mainly reply on google translate, but it is ok for us and totally understandable.

Couldn't expect anything better. Way beyond my expectations, they really undersell this.

Fantastic! Stay here and you will not regret.

I believe they have 7 baths, all well kept. Great food and very nice rooms. Excellent service as well.

Will not stay anywhere else when I come back to Kusatsu.

We (me, my husnand and daughter) arrived in Kusatsu Onsen on 26/12/2022 at the bus terminal and our daughter gave a call to the ryokan to pick us up from the terminal. The shuttle transport came and we reached the ryokan, check in and the staffs took care and brought our luggages up our room as we booked the traditional Japanese room ( the room is spacious and clean that comes eith a mountain view) with breakfast and dinner. It was truly an amazing experience on an authentic onsen and the food “kaiseki “ breakfast amd dinner was excellent on presentation, the quality and freshness of the food and the passion that the chef curated the cuisines was really awesome. Nothing to complain. The staffs are so friendly and helpful during our two nights stay. Oh not forgetting, we thoroughly enjoyed the onsens. Overall, this has made our stay in Kusatsu Boun Onsen so memorable.

We shall definitely be back here in the near future. Thank you so much to everyone in Kusatsu Boun Onsen for making our stay so comfortable with great memories!

I asked a Japanese friend for recommendations on a traditional ryokan and this is the place she suggested. She did not steer me wrong! It was an experience I had dreamed of for so long -- staying in a traditional Japanese inn, wearing yukata, soaking in an onsen, sleeping on a cozy futon on tatami-lined floors. Dinner was one of the most exquisite meals of my life. The staff were also so kind -- we came on our honeymoon and they gave us beautiful ceramic cups as a wedding gifts.

Had a great stay. Service was great, staff are very accommodating they do so much more then expected. My family went for breakfast and dinner package, it was a good experience to try traditional style foods. It was not to my sister's taste as she is picky, so i can understand it is not to everyones tastes, but everything else she enjoyed. The facilities are enough to feel like a spa day, with 3 types of onsen that rotate during the day. Onsen separate men and women. As a note, we took a 2 year old with us, onsen was just fine, just be cautious to not go into the hottest bath with kids. As a Vegetarian, they did not say they can accommodate for me, but they did anyway. Bravo.

An traditional and authentic Japanese onsen we loved our stay here and the staff was excellent. They even called us to warn us about the road closure and provided us with alternative route as we had informed them of late check in since we were driving from the snow monkey park.

Ms. Horu informed they won't be able to provided dinner due to late arrival which we understood and accepted even though it was apart of our booking. We stayed in touch with them as they had called us a few times to ensure our safety and we were so grateful for it.

We arrived around 8.30pm and they still managed to prepare our dinner which we were thankful as most places were closed due to the heavy snow. While we had our dinner in a private room our bags were sent up and they even gave us an upgrade for our room. The staff were very professional, thoughtful and attentive. We will surely return and stay here again as its such a beautiful place.

Duration :Had an excellent 2 nights stay at boun. We arrived late at around 6:30pm from shinjuku ( almost 5 hours by bus from bus terminal). We emailed the hotel to come pick us up and it was done, luckily we did so because it was quite dark and cold. It would be better to email them the day before to arrange for shuttle service as it is around a 10-15 minute walk with road searching and the hotel is located slightly uphill.

Arrival: We arrived and was greeted warmly by hotel staff and promptly following they served dinner in our room. The hotel is very well kept and looked very new. They will provide you will a pair of slippers that is strictly used within the hotel. If you head out to explore the area in the daytime you can leave your wooden key chained room key at reception.

Meals: The meals were excellent with a great variety in food served. We’ve stayed at many onsen ryokan within Japan and this is one of the good ones. 2 night stay with totally different themed dinner menu. The meals are delivered and eaten inside your room at a designated time (they will let you know the time of your meal at check in)

Onsens: There are 3 onsens and they alternate between male and female according to the time frame. All 3 of the onsens have a small outdoor onsen that is accessed from indoor onsen. The onsens are clean and pretty spacious and not overcrowded as the hotel is relatively small and cozy. The source of the hot spring is very good for relieving muscle tension and has very little smell.

Surrounding: Very close to the centre of the town but not over touristy as noun is located a little higher with a small walk upwards to get to hotel.

Overall: We were very happy to have stayed at boun with their great staff and the high level of cleanliness. We truly had a relaxing and comforting stay and were fed stuffed full. Try exploring the kusatsu area with a vast amount of gift shops and some restaurants ( if you opt for the no meal option then you can also enjoy some restaurants in the area but bear in mind they close quite early ) We appreciate the size of this ryokan as the noise levels are low and the onsens are rarely crowded Excellent overall!!

One of the best hotels I have visited. Excellent onsen, dinner and services you will ever get. Though communication in English with hotel staffs can be a bit challenging but we still managed it without much problem. Btw, they got people who can speak Mandarin and Cantonese. For those who needs it, this can be very helpful! I forgot the name of the lady but she’s from Malaysia!!

Visited on Jan 7, 2019: Excelent Hotel in Kusatso Onsen Area. Food was awesome and the rooms are super big, modern and clean as well. The hotel own onsen are quite big and very comfy, they're changing the onsen on a daily basis between man and women. The food is also great, its one of the best hotels around Kusatsu. I really enjoyed the time.

Great Place to experience traditional Onsen! Staff was excellent, very nice and always smiling. We called from the bus station and they came to pick us up within 5 min. The room we had was huge, clean and comfortable. The onsen was awesome too, with 3 different areas and different baths within. Food was delicious! Smaller than other ryokans, but still a very good portion, enough to make you full. Overall, highly recommend!

Really enjoyed my stay here, the hot springs were great, and I loved the more traditional atmosphere of the hotel. Personally I didn't like the food they served, but I'm not very used to Japanese food.

It is a very nice hotel with famous onsen. There are 3 onsens available with both indoor and outdoor.
The onsens were not crowd and most of the time you can enjoy the private and tranquil environment.
The staff here are very polite and helpful too.
And finally enjoy 2 wonderful meals here.

Great services with spectacular onsen! You could only appreciate why it is ranked the top onsen in Japan after you've been in it!!

Will definitely visit here again.... Preferably during winter when you're surround by snow falling will you're in the onsen!

Very good onsen Ryokan in kusatsu area. The hotel is a little hard to find, not on the main road. All staff are very attentive and most can communicate in English.
