Eidaya was my home for a night while visiting Kusatsu Onsen and I really enjoyed my stay. They offer traditional Japanese ryokan accommodation with private onsen baths that can be used by any of the hotel guests.

Our room for four was massive - with a sofa area for lounging and plenty of tatami space for our futons. The rooms come equipped with a mini fridge where you can store food and even had a Super Nintendo for the throwback gamers out there. It was a very comfortable stay.

The private onsen rooms were the best. There were three to choose from and you could enter any that didn't have the doors closed. They comfortably fit 2-3 people so are perfect for couples and small families. Be sure to read the temperature gauges outside to see whether the bath is too hot for you or not.

Be sure to reserve breakfast in advance. It was only ¥1000 more per person when I booked, and was one of the best meals we had in Japan. They were kind enough to make an entirely vegan meal for me and it was fantastic.

Staff were super friendly and many spoke great English as well. After we left, the manager handed us coupons to redeem for a free coffee/tea at a local cafe before we got on the bus. Amazing service!

Our stay with Eidaya was absolutely magical and the perfect way to celebrate our anniversary. The staff was friendly and welcoming and helped us through our limited Japanese. The room was HUGE (even for a westerner!) and was the perfect place to lounge after our onsen visits.
They have 3 private onsen baths of varying temperature and we visited them 3 or 4 times a day during our stay.
It should be noted that Kusatsu is a very hilly town and Eidaya is high up at one end of town so expect a lot of uphill walking if you plan to go around to the various public onsens (highly recommended!)

Beautiful little japanese style guest house in a perfect location. We really loved the atmosphere and aesthetics of the place. The staff were really friendly and helpful and also spoke excellent english. The place has also these small private onsens which we enjoyed and I would definately recommend to try the strawberry milk afterwards which they sell at the reception. The rooms were spacious and beautiful. Also the traditional japanese style breakfast was an interesting experience to say the least! Definately would recommend this place and if we were to travel to Kusatsu again we would stay here.

Where to start, first of all, this place is awesome!
The staffs are very nice and helpful.
I booked one night with full board (2 meals, dinner and next day breakfast). Foods are delicious and they offer complimentary tea and yuzu water in the hallway for people to drink after onsen.
They have 3 private onsen rooms, first come, first serve, and we did not have problem finding an open one. They are open to guests 24/7 so you can get onsen any time.
Room is spacious and clean, very comfortable beds.
Abit far from the middle of the town, but just only 10 min of walk.
They also offer shuttle to the bus station.

I can't speak highly enough about the experience we had here. The accommodation was perfect - spacious, comfortable, very clean. The beds were incredibly comfortable and warm. The host was so accommodating and friendly. The private onsen in the villa was very luxurious. If you're coming to Kusatsu, you can't go wrong staying here!

We just checked out from this hotel today. I would say this hotel gave us an excellent experience and service. Our room was so comfy and spacious for the price we paid. The owner was so nice to us. We had zero problems conversing in English. In addition, all of the staff were really friendly! I’d highly recommend booking your next onsen trip here.

The photos don’t give justice to the ambiance and homey vibe that Eidaya has. We’ve been searching for months for an authentic ryokan where we could try having an onsen bath coming from a real hot spring—and where better to experience this than in Eidaya where they have 3 private onsens available for use 24 hours a day, with the water directly sourced from the Yubatake… unlike in some overly tourist-populated places where some onsens are from tap water. The healing properties of the sulfur hot spring bath are preserved here.

You canNOT miss their half-board meals. The meals were divine and were a highlight for us. We looked forward to it each morning and evening. The staff spoke fluent English which made communication seamless. They even explained the dishes for us which we highly appreciated. The cold sake is a must-try.

Last but not least is the superb customer service. We were just 2 foreigners far away from home, but staying at Eidaya we didn’t feel like outsiders at all because of how welcoming everybody was.

Just book it. You won’t regret it.

a wonderful traditional ryokan experience. There are 4 private onsen rooms available to guests and there is even a retro game room along with a massage chair. The owner is so kind, very friendly and gave us local food reccomendations. The room was so big and spacious and there was traditional onsen clothing and even a retro gaming console for you to play. Easily my favorite place I stayed in Japan.

Lovely hotel with traditional bedding arrangements. Very comfortable beds, big room with a big tv! The 4 private onsens are great for guests to use and you can use them 24/7 so long as the door is open. The person we spoke to at check-in is very friendly and also offered us many tips and a free drink. They even took our bags back to the bus stop on the day of check-out so we could meet them there. Highly recommended!

Very good Ryokan in no.1 onsen town of Japan. The young male owner could communicated in English very well. He is quite familiar with tourists. There are 4 private onsen room in the ryokan which open 24/7. Parking lot is opposite the hotel. It is less than 10 mins walk to center of town. Highly recommended. Room is renovated in really good condition. (Stayed in April 2023)

Convinient and foreigner-friendly ryokan in Gunma. 10 minutes walk to Yubatake. Offers complimentary pick-up and drop-off from and to the bus station.

There are 4 private onsen you can use in the property. Quite clean but the water is a bit too hot. They also have massage chair, vintage arcade games (even in the room) and massive TV inside your unit.

Last minute lucky booking. Newly renovated building with Japanese style tatami rooms as well as modern contemporary Japanese rooms with a western touch. The staff were really friendly and so helpful, and also spoke English. Natural onsen downstairs is open 24 hours, there's a private room for those that are shy. I would definitely come back again.
They also allow pets to stay.
