This is mother nature's creation at its best. Over hundreds of millions of years, the volcanic activities sculptured the magnificent rocks into today's shapes and caves. The site in incredibly beautiful. Make sure you see all 5 caves to get the variety and beauties these rocks can form.

Genbudo Park was beautiful. If you are coming from Kinosaki Onsen I highly recommend taking the train to Gembudo and having the museum pick you up by boat. You just have to call ahead and let them know your arrival time.

I am from hongkong and visited the places 19 April

Firstly , that cafe is wonderful with sunlight , nice and open river view , it's good and cozy for enjoying tea in afternoon.

What's more , highly appreciated the round trip boat services , the guy was so nice , kind , have helped and kept smiling while explaining on the timetable for boat returning to JR stations to match railway timetable 😁

Amazing basalt columns that twist this way and that. No caves to go into but the outer walls are enough. Very good geography exhibition in a small building near the entrance that was simple enough for my 10 year old yo understand.

This is a great little park that shows some unusual rock formations. You can park at the museum, but don’t buy a ticket there for the park (The museum is a separate ticket I think). Head up the stairs marked as entrance and there will be a ticket gate to buy (couple of hundred yen per person). There are 5 main caves all with slightly different rock styles.

Gembudo Park is a series of columnar volcanic formations dating back 1.6 million years. The path stops at several walls and caves that have been formed out of these unique geological phenomenon. The path is even made from hexagonal stone taken from where some of the volcanic rock has collapsed. For people going to Kinosaki Onsen, this is a great place to stop and spend 30-60 minutes. There are English signs as well so you can read about the history. There is also a gem/fossil store with other gifts, as well as a cafe/restaurant and a museum across the street. It is only about 10 minutes from Kinosaki and visitors coming by car will pass right by it. Don't miss it!

Thank you to the friendly and knowledgeable Saito-san (I hope I am spelling this right) for a wonderful visit and providing excellent information about the park and geology, even though the weather was very rainy! The “concave” and “convex” rocks were especially fun to learn about, as well as how the lava “contracts” as it cools!! If you are ever visiting California, let us know— we hope to see you again!

Nice place for a quick stop. The lady who showed us around spoke good English and Japanese. She was from the park and the tour only cost a few hundred yen per person. Definitely recommend having someone walk you through the sites -- as it's well worth the price! -- so you can understand what is natural and what is the work of mankind (excavation). We took the longer tour, and it was still under and hour.

Genbudo Park ( Basalt Rock Cave Park ) is located in the southern part of Toyooka City of Hyogo Prefecture. As well as being a part of Sanin Coastal Geo Park has long been designated as a natural monument of Japan. The columnar joint rock of Genbudo was formed by an eruption of volcanic activity occurred approximately 1.6 million years ago as a result of reversal action of magnetic field of earth. It was discovered in 1931 that the direction of its magnetic flow was once running toward opposite direction from the current direction of magnetic flow. Those fine patterns of crevices on the rock are the result of terrestrial phenomenon formed when lave cooled down after volcanic eruption. Genbudo is the origin of naming association in Japanese term of Gembugan which is basalt. Genbu is a mythological monster creature in Japan which is a gigantic tortoise entwisted with a gigantic serpent considered to be a guardian of north. You can see those patterns on the rock suggesting scales of reptiles which has given such name to this rock. The entrance to the site is free. There are some onsite guide offering a tour providing two different courses for 300 yen and 500 yen per person. There are some information panels explaining about rock formation of each spot of highlight in English. There is a large parking space provided for visitors. If you wish to learn the details of its rock formation and history visit Genbudo Museum right next to the site. It is very easy to access here with JR Sanin West Line since it is very close to Genbudo Station.
