Well this is a unique stop on the road less traveled. It’s actually pretty cool to see the huge turtle on to; of the roadside pavilion. There weren’t a lot of cars on the road this time of year and it appears the area is in a little run down. It would be nice if the bushes were cut down to be able to see the ocean.

Quirky roadside attraction past Cape Hedo and around the northeastern horn of the island. On trips up to Okuma, our family would often opt to take the “long” way back home on the 70 East (instead of HWY 58) and pass this oddity that my kids lovingly nicknamed “Gamera.”

The roads up this way are windy and dense with jungle. So it’s always a relief to see Gamera (and son) offering travelers a reprieve to get out of the car and stretch a bit before white knuckling it all the way back south trying to avoid hitting any endangered frogs, lizards, and Yanbaru Kuina.

There are no public restrooms in this spot. But there are a few picnic tables in the vicinity of the parking area. And depending on the season of the year, the vegetation (when cut back from the fence line) can offer the slimmest of views of the Pacific Ocean.

The attraction is really the Turtle Gazebo itself, which is currently in a sad state of disrepair and crumbling. You visit it to pay homage to “Gamera” the protector of humanity.

Technically it's a Tortoise as it lives on land. It's not hard to understand..
