The turtle inn hotorian annex is my favorite place to stay in Nikko by far. It's quiet, secluded, but a 10 minute walk from just about everything. There is a wonderful bathhouse that accommodates 2 people and overlooks the river. 10/10 will be here again soon.

I stayed here with my family and the entire stay was fantastic! The private hot spring bath was absolutely the highlight of the stay (as expected). It really was private (the changing room which accesses the hot spring room is lockable) and the bath is a PERFECT temperature for women!! The room was extremely clean and spacious enough for 3 people. The amenities provided were great - including the adorable yukata which have an inner pocket! The private bathrooms with each room are great and not small at all. The tatami floors in each room were in great condition too. The windows featured shoji screens which were a wonderful source of morning light. Each room has a powerful air conditioner and the futons were INCREDIBLE! Best sleep I've had in a long time. We visited in late November so it was cold and if anything, we were sweating in the futons! The duvets and blankets and the futon padding were wonderfully thick, I couldn't recommend it more.

I also made a mistake and arrived one day before my actual booking and they were still able to accommodate me without any grief, which I'm absolutely grateful for. Most of the employees spoke pretty good English and were able to give us a local map and tell us the local amenities and restaurants etc. The hotel itself is around 10 minutes (scenic) walk to the main shrine and temple area of Nikko so it's not far at all. A great location, could not recommend it more.

Also, hot tea and coffee are available free of charge 24/7 with a selection of paid goodies like ramen cups. And if you can, get the breakfast! Some beautiful handcut fruit, buttered bread, eggs, and it's all presented beautifully. A great location!

I was lucky enough to stay at the Turtle Inn Annex Hitori-an nearly 20 years ago and have been coming back ever since. On the few occasions when I've stayed at other hotels in Nikko, it hasn't compared and so I always end up back at the Turtle Inn Annex. The staff are kind, helpful and knowledgable about the area and restaurants. The location is a little walk from the centre of Nikko but it's peaceful and relaxing. Also it's suitably located for the Toshogu Shrine complex and the buses up to Lake Chuzenji. The bath is private, which if good if you want to relax with your family. The breakfast is extra but well worth the price (see photos) as it will set you up for a day of hiking and exploring.
I would definitely recommend this place for families.

Located near many local attractions (I recommend Toshogu shrine and Shoyoen Garden) and maybe a 10 minute walk to the bus stop so I was able to easily get to the JR train station.

The room was clean and spacious and I enjoyed the private onsen, though I did have to check a few times in the evening until it was vacant. I also enjoyed the free coffee in the morning and the comfortable yukata.

Staff was very helpful and helped me ship my luggage via Yamato, which I was very grateful for as I would not have been able to have figured it out on my own.

Small but clean rooms, comfortable futon, incredible location immersed in greenery and right next to the river - the sound of water running will accompany you all night (but if you’re someone who needs absolute silence to sleep, be aware!)
There is a small but clean onsen that can be used privately for 30 minutes at a time without reservation, whenever you see it vacant. There is also a bus stop right next door for the cheap (200 yen) nikko bus that takes you to the main tourist attractions (but not to the station, mind you). It’s also only one minute on foot from the beautiful Kanmanga-fuchi Abyss, a riverside gorge lined with jizo statues. Well worth a 10-30 minutes stroll over there.

Lovely place! The owner was so nice, knowledgeable and helpful! The onsen was amazing, it was private, so not a problem if you have tattoos. Was the first time sleeping on a futon bed and it was super comfortable.

The staff was amazingly friendly
Rooms are comfortable, I had a view on the river
There’s a private onsen.
You can’t book a time slot but you can go there
When it’s available
Most restaurants close at 5pm.
There’s an excellent soba and yuba restaurant (closing at 4pm) next to the hotel.
Also bell cafe opening at 5pm

Great place to stay in Nikko. Its around a 15 minute walk to the main temples and a short taxi ride from the station. The room was comfortable and we had a great river view. The onsen was wonderful, it's private which was a nice perk. You just go in when the sign says its free. It has sliding windows so you can enjoy the sight and sound of the river while relaxing in the water, beautiful.

The location was quite a distance from the station but this also meant it was a short distance from all of the shrines that Nikko is famous for. My partner and I took a cab from the station to the Inn, it took about 10 minutes and cost about 1300 Yen which we were okay with. From there, the walk to the shrines takes about 15 to 20 minutes but the scenery is so amazing that it's really a part of the experience that you miss if you take the bus from the area around the station. Definitely not for everyone but it worked out really well for us! On the Inn itself, lovely service and wonderful amenities for what you pay for - there's even a bath (though we didn't try it). Would definitely recommend!

This place is really cute. The staff is friendly and the breakfast was great. We got bread, what a relief! They have nice rooms and an amazing bath from which you look out over the river. You can use the bath as a private onsen.

We did not visit the local scenery because they have warning signs depicting bears. We are scared of bears.
The only thing we did see was the result of a very hard working grandma. There are a lot of statues and this woman managed to knit a little hat for each of them.

The staff is great, very friendly and helpful, always willing to help. The hotel and rooms are extremely clean and the rooms are cleaned daily. The private onzen is a luxury to have and eventhough it is shared by all the guests, you can always find plenty of time to use it. The dinning room is a welcoming place where to have a coffee or some complimentary green tea. The location is peaceful and 10 minutes away from the bus stop and shop. I totally recomend the experience here.

We stayed here for 3 nights in October when Typhoon Hagibis hit Tokyo. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room, which had tatami mat floors, bed mats, and screen windows. The beds were so comfortable! I was worried about sleeping on them for the first time but I was pleasantly surprised :) There was air conditioning and we had a bathroom with a Japanese toilet, sink, and shower in the room. We were given yukatas (summer fabric type robes) to wear which had the cute little turtle logo on them. The private onsen in the hotel has a beautiful view of the river and is very easy to reserve. There are not many rooms here so you will not have to compete with many other people for the onsen. We had breakfast the first day, which was a hard boiled egg, toast, fruit, and tea and juice. It was an additional fee but very reasonable, I think about $10 USD per person. There is a really cool park near the hotel with “phantom Buddha” statues by the water. It’s only about a five minute walk from the hotel and doesn’t take very long to visit. The hotel is in a great location—only about 15 minutes to the famous Shinkyo bridge or to the shrines. We also took a bus 45 minutes to Lake Chuzenji which we recommend! Though the main town is about a 10 or 15 minute walk from the hotel, the location is surrounded by nature and is very quaint and peaceful. We LOVED our stay here. Our receptionist, Naoko, made us feel so welcome. Before the typhoon she instructed us where we could buy microwaveable food, and then asked us to be back at the hotel a certain time for our safety’s sake. When the typhoon altered our plans, she called our Tokyo hotel and explained to them that there had been a landslide on the Nikko train line and we wouldn’t be able to get to Tokyo that night. She then arranged for us to stay another night at the hotel. She even took us in her car to the bus stop to show us where we needed to catch the bus to Tokyo the next morning. On top of all of this—she wrote our directions for us in Japanese and English, in case we got lost and asked for help. She was so amazing, I am so grateful for all of her help! We would definitely stay here again! Thank you for a great experience.

I went on a spontaneous trip to Nikko. Initially I only intended to stay for one night, but I liked it so much I stayed for two instead.

I had a Japanese style room, for 5000 JPY per night, maybe it was off-season prices, but it was worth every Yen. The owner was very polite, helpful and even spoke a little bit of English. She provided a map of the area and marked points of interest.

The Hotel does not have an Onsen, but a private Spa that is styled like an Onsen. It's not however an Onsen, nor is it referred to a such anywhere in the hotel.

All in all it was a beautiful and relaxing experience exploring Nikko thanks in huge part to the Annex Turtle Inn Hotori-an.

Hidden gem in Nikko. Very nice location to visit the world heritage area by foot, and other few beautiful spots. A bit pricy but it is worth it. A big plus: the private onsen.
A bit hard if you don't speak any Japanese.

A small hotel with traditional, japanese rooms (meaning tatami and sleeping on the ground on a foam) in a beautiful environment. The hotel has a small spa that one can use alone. Great place to stay a few days and visit nearby attractions.

Great, cosy and calm but still near everything you need in Nikko!

This is a great place to stay in if you are in Nikko. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The place itself is very cosy and the room was fantastic. We had a japanese style room with view on the river. And it also has a private onsen you can use.

I fully recommend it.

Such a cozy little minshuku or Japanese bed and breakfast. The breakfast is only 800 for all you can eat western style. The staff are all super friendly and really go out of their way to help and can speak english. They have special events at the hotel for Japanese koto and other presentations as well.
