If you like exploring a piece of history, this is perfect for you. The architecture and gardens are lovely.
That a former emperor came here every summer, speaks to its charm and regal value. After walking around you can visit lovely cafes near by.

The Imperial Villa went on forever. Lots of rooms. They look out to courtyards and the beautiful landscaping. This time of year is great because of the changing season. Colors and all. It is worth the visit!

This Villa and it's garden is amazing. If you wish to see original japanese buildings like a houndred years ago please pay this a visit. 106 rooms and 13 inner gardens speaks for itself. It's really worth a visit!

I have been here twice and it's one of my favourite places to visit in Nikko. Always peaceful and a fascinating villa - Mix of Edo/Meiji architecture and Japanese and western interiors. I love looking out at the garden as you go through the villa and then walking around the garden and looking back at the building. The garden has elements of a formal Japanese garden but I find it feels quite natural and peaceful. There is nearby parking and the cafe is wonderful (separate review).

Very underrated place that is steeped in history. The displays were really informative and the whole place is very clean and well maintained. The gardens behind the villa are tranquil and nice to just sit in. You should come during spring or autumn to enjoy the lovely view of the flowers and the foliage.

This is a very interesting place about Japanese imperial family during World War II. There is a beautiful garden and nice (although not regał impressions) interior. Unfortunattely, there is no furniture and everyday items used by Emperor Hirohito and his family.

A beautiful architecture with rich history, perfect for a rainy day in Nikko. The villa is quiet large and takes about 1.30h di tour (if you’re a slower, “observe-very-detail” person like me) the outside garden is stunning and the entire place brings a sense of peace and serenity. Entrance is quite cheap and lockers are available for free inside.

A delightful surprise. The imperial villa bridges a period from Edo, through Meiji and into the Showa. It was rebuilt and rennovated at various times. As such it is just a little more modern than some of the old temples, shrines, and residences but still built in a very traditional style with a traditional garden. E.g., it had electricity, but a very early form of wiring. You can see into the bathrooms, and they are beautiful hinoki wood spaces with wooden baths and squat toilets. There's also a billiards room with a modern table. But it still feels like supremely japanese. Also reserve some time for the small but beautiful garden that you can really wonder around in.
They open different parts of the building during different seasons. There are real exhibits on how it was constructed and what it looked like in different periods. We went on a public holiday and expected it to be crowded. But at 10:30am it felt very quiet compared to the more famous world heritage shrine/mausoleum area near by. We walked between them. There's also a generous car park at the villa which I would use instead of the main world heritage car park which had a 1km queue to get into it.
Well worth the modest entrance fee.

Though small to be a palace, well well-maintained with green surroundings.

A lovely palace. I have spent nearly 2 hours inside this place and still wanted more time. The garden outside was quiet and a joy to walk. Inside a great example of Japanese x European architecture.

We came in without any plans. The man in front was very helpful and even said we have a discount because we have the nikko pass. The building itself is beautiful and also it's garden

Must visit for an architecture enthusiast. The traditional architecture with layers of additions as time changes with constant change in style of building can be observed.
Great place to view autumn colours.

This Mansion was used as Japanese emperor's summer villa. So I don't recommend you to visit this historical great house in winter. It's very cold.
