University of Tokyo General Library

The General Library was built in Showa 3 (1928) to a design by Professor Uchida Yoshikazu (later University of Tokyo President).

The original University Library was totally destroyed in the Great Kanto Earthquake of September 1st, Taisho 12 (1923), and the 700,000 books it held were lost at the same time. The collection included priceless materials inherited from forerunners of the University such as the Kaisei Gakkou, Medical School and Tokugawa period schools.

The reconstruction of the General Library was carried out with a donation of 4 million yen from John Rockefeller Jr. This would be worth approximately 10 billion yen at current prices. The League of Nations issued a resolution calling for support in re-establishing the collection, which was rebuilt with donations both from within Japan and overseas. The General Library has also enjoyed the support of the Rockefeller Foundation for major improvements over the years.

Amazing library! The building layout is a bit difficult to understand, but this is often the case in old buildings. They have maps everywhere to you find your way better. They have a wide variety in foreign books (in English, French, German, etc.). It was recently renovated (some areas are still under construction), which makes the rooms even nicer.

Opened to the public, but if you are not students/non-affiliated citizens, to enter you have to register first. Office hour including reference room is on from 9AM to 5PM (only weekday), so be careful when to visit depending on your purpose. Microfilm service is a little difficult to figure out, but generally speaking, things are easy. Great place to study or conduct research!

130万冊を超える量、質ともに日本最大、最高の図書館。本が並んでいるようなデザイン。 内田祥三 氏の内田ゴシックの建造物📚休日も空いているのが嬉しいです。夜の #図書館 も、窓の灯りが幻想的で、エモい…笑✨

各席にはコンセントが設置されており、勉強するには最高の環境。
1階記念室にもコンセントが設置されたのはありがたいです。

一般の人も予約をすれば利用可能。
関東大震災からの再建で、ロックフェラー財団からの寄付（現在価値で100億円）で建った建物。

快適ですが、このまえ勉強終わってふと下を見たらGがいてびっくりしました涙

荘厳です!
中は迷路のようですが、何回か使っていると慣れてきます。

日本を代表する大学の図書館本館　東大の図書館はこの総合図書館と農学分館がある。駒場等にもあるが、分館は農学部のみ。他は、図書室。本館２階にはかつて玉座があったが、30年近く前に改修されて現在は存在しない。２階への階段は赤い絨毯。閲覧室の天井が高く、快適な閲覧空間が開ける。

学習や論文執筆に最適な場所!

荒れた図書館が綺麗になって快適になりました。

外観は貫禄があります。中に入るにはそれなりの偏差値が必要です。

内田教授設計の建物の
外部と内部。建物の前の噴水と大理石のベンチ。ショパンの手。ユゴー、パステュールの胸像。ハーン、プランデンのレリーフ。豊富な蔵書。等等。

国内では他に類を見ない図書館
