Cool place if you want to learn about WWII history here in Okinawa. My 6 year old is obsessed with war history so he absolutely loved it. Very cool to see the tunnels but very sad to know the horror that occurred there decades ago. Decent parking and lovely views from the entrance. They accept cards for the tour.

If you're interested in delving into the history of WWII in Okinawa and experiencing a serene and peaceful atmosphere, there's a place that comes highly recommended. It serves as a reminder of the past and highlights the significance of peace. The site's presentation effectively maintains its neutral stance, leaving a lasting impression on visitors. It's an unforgettable experience that truly showcases the resilience and determination of the Okinawan people. For those with a keen interest in Japanese WWII history and the remarkable efforts made by the locals, this destination is a must-visit.

I last visited this complex a decade ago.

As time has moved forward and my perspectives have changed, I feel that this visit provided a much more sobering insight into the war in Okinawa.

I was especially struck by how the naval leadership viewed local Okinawans, which seems to contrast with how they were treated by so many.

It was also interesting to find out that new excavations are still underway and remains and artifacts have very recently been discovered.

This is a very sobering experience. The scars on the walls, especially, speak so much.

Highly recommend.

Parking lot is available. There were people but not too crowded. Tickets are available online or directly at the counter. It is interesting for people who likes to be up close to history. Technically, the tunnel has been restored so it’s not as exciting as one would expect. However, it is still good to look around.

I love the history of WW2 in the Pacific, and this is a major piece of the story. In three months in 1945, over 200,000 died here in the last land battle of the conflict.

Visit the underground bunker where Japanese Supreme Commander Ota, his six officers, and 4000 men committed suicide on 13 June 1945.

Excavated 1952-77, and in 2023, this is a well-preserved WW2 setting. It is highly recommended.

An easy, inexpensive taxi/Uber from the cruise ship port or downtown.

A museum and underground bunker that reminds us of the importance of peace. May the tragedies of war never repeat.
The bunker was built by the Japanese soldiers using hands and tools only - pretty impressive.

Took a 600yen taxi from the manko wetlands here.

My son and I came here and explored this wonderful piece of history. The cab ride was a little far but I expected as much, considering it’s a former military installation. Everything inside was fascinating, my son had fun running around and exploring all the different rooms.

I visited this place and first thing you learn is history! Perseverance! Resistance! Dying for something bigger than yourself, Patriotism! You will see brave men and women who fought for the people of Okinawa! Taking first step underground will Take your breath away! Its sophisticated tunnels constructed by hand and pickaxe (I posted a photo protected by glass and showing a pickaxe I found in this tunnel) is beyond imagination! History says 4000 people piled up inside hiding from the enemy in ww2 battleground. Commanders end their own lives rather than getting captured by the enemy! After you visit, You will find reasons to believe that war should be avoided at all costs!!!

It was well worth the drive. It really gives you the depth of horror that people faced during a battle between two countries. Moreover, it shows how war has no boundaries. Peace over War LOVE

Interesting museum. I'm a history person, so I liked visiting. I'm always impressed how hard the Japanese people worked to build these tunnels.

Very interesting museum where you can learn how the Navy fought in Okinawa. The tunnels that were used at the time is partially open to the public and parts are still closed. From the route you can see the closed off parts and it shows how narrow and low the tunnels used to be.

Lots of history and you can spend a little bit of time or a lot of time going through the tunnels. I spent about 15 minutes reading the signs, looking around, and traveling through the entire area to be done. Others were in there for about 45 minutes. This is not an all day event by any means and is really cheap to get into (I believe 300¥ or 400¥ per person). There’s a small gift shop once you exit.
The tunnels were not cold at all and didn’t seem like a confined space that some people were afraid of.

Due to restrictions I couldn't go inside. I was impressed with the whole park and the monuments outside. There are multiple playgrounds and a view point. Will be back to walk inside the tunnel. -- the tunnel is reached by going through a building and down the stairs.
Free parking inside the park area. Costs yen to get inside.

It's A very important historical place, this place make me emotional with the feel of war, how their life was ,how they used to sleep, eat and how much pain one soldier have to bear during the war.
Also the view from the top is amazing

Great history of battle of Okinawa, with maps and video. Recommend coming here first, gives good context for other sites.

The tunnels are a sobering reminder of the horrors the people of Okinawa faced during the Second World War. Facts about the war are also laid out clearly in the museum - don’t miss it before entering the tunnels. Getting there is a simple bus ride from central Naha (near Prefectural Station) and a 10 minute walk.

It's a short walk but it's very interesting. There's a small museum when you walk in. You can go upstairs to see some photos and make a origami. You pay in yen at the desk. Then head to the tunnel. It's very interesting and sad also. When you come out there's a nice shop with souvenirs and ice cream. Then a short walk up hill to the parking lot.
