Jabal al-Qala, one of Amman's seven mountains, is a great place to take some great photos of Amman. Here you can see the Umayyad palace in a fairly good condition. It was interesting to see that in November, lizards are still sunbathing on the stones and the green lemon are still on the tree.

Located at the top of the Amman Citadel. With breath taking views of Amman new and old this place certainly is worth a visit. You'll notice where they have reproduced the wall carving to show how it once was. Amazing.

As we walked through the ruins of the Citadel, we discovered a massive palace complex that had a beautiful dome and massive doors! The doors were so heavy that we could only open them together. We reached the reception hall of the Umayyad Palace. It was built in 720 AD, but did not last long. It was destroyed by an earthquake 30 years later, and just a year later, the Umayyad dynasty was destroyed.

The Umayyad dynasty ruled a great Arab empire in the 8th century. This palace was one of the centers of their reign.
Byzantine, Roman, and Arabic styles are combined in the architectural features of the palace, reflecting a mix of cultures and influences from that era.

Loved learning about the different eras of history witnessed by this wonderful city. We didn't have time to make it to the museum, but walking around there are signs to read, indicating which structure is related to which era (Byzantine, Roman, etc.). I would have loved to see even More informational plaques, and there was a bit of unnecessary rubbish in some corners that could have easily been picked up (ex: large oil cans) but overall I'm very happy we made it here.

The palace itself and the surrounding structures are so neat to see. You can spend a decent amount of time walking around up here. I recommend sunscreen, though.

Included in the Jordan Pass - also part of the citadel enclosure.

I loved this palace. It has a real sense of history about it and is in incredibly good condition.

We found it convenient to use Uber to reach the palace, and then enjoy a leisurely walk down to the Old Town. This allowed us to take in the local sights and sounds while moving from the palace to the bustling heart of the city. Overall, a visit to the Umayyad Palace offers an insightful glimpse into the past and makes for an enjoyable start to exploring the Old Town area.

This is the grandest thing on the Amman Citadel and catches your attention from afar because of its distinctive big blue dome. It's a huge stone building and the inside is reinforced using a beautiful modern wooden structure. The views of the city and surrounding hills are spectacular.

Umayyad Palace is located inside what is known as the Amman Citadel.

The palace gives visitors a glimpse into life during the Umayyad period in what is now Jordan. It is a popular photo spot, as both inside and out offer spectacular images.

The complex was probably built during the reign of the Umayyad Caliph Hisham, between 724 and 743 AD and was used as an administrative centre and governor’s residence. The audience hall is the most significant part of the whole palace edifice. It is one of the most famous archaeological buildings not only at Amman citadel but in all of Jordan. It was built by Abdel-Malik Ibn Marwan to be used as a reception hall where he could meet his expeditions and army leaders. In 1998 the hall was roofed by a modern wooden dome to allow the structure to be used more easily for modern cultural events.

The Umayyad market square is part of the Umayyad Palatine City in Amman. It dates to about 730 AD and it was designed to separate the monumental gateway to the Umayyad Palace from the congregational mosque.

There are rows of shops flanking the open square area, which had a cistern at its center. Three shops at the northeast corner nearest the baths were later converted during the Medieval Fatimid period into a mosque. You can still notice the mihrab inside.

Also, inscribed on the steps to the congregational mosque you can still partially read the only Arabic inscription found in-situ on the Citadel.

This is part of Amman Citadel. The Umayyad Palace is likely the final structure constructed within the Amman Citadel. Dating back to the Umayyad Caliphate, it stands out as an architectural departure from the Roman era, showcasing the distinctive features of Islamic architecture. It once served as both a residential and administrative center, and today, it is remarkably well-preserved, making it a worthwhile destination for visitors.

It's one of the largest and oldest mosques in Aleppo, a great piece of art with its interiors and wooden roofs. Unfortunately it was heavily damaged during the civil war causing massive fires inside and the minaret to collapse. The mosque is under reconstruction now, with slow progress. This is how it looks from the top of Aleppo citadel
