The Byzantine Church of St. George was built in the late 6th century AD next to a cave believed to be a place of worship to a Roman deity. Inside the cave there are niches and a couple of stone altars one of them with a Greek inscription. It was excavated and restored in 1993 by ACOR under the sponsorship of the Abdul Hameed Shoman Foundation. Today the church is a peaceful place to sit in the shade and relax.

One should be mindful not to disturb anything, and not to litter the place. Therefore, one's garbage should be collected and discarded appropriately.

The remains of the church are located inside Darat al-Funun where you can also enjoy an outdoor sitting area around a fountain courtyard and drink Turkish coffee or Arab tea.
