A very pleasant surprise. The food was very high quality and nice presentation. We had the puffin, fish skins and scallops as appetizers. For the main course we ate the Halibut and the Lamb. Everything was very good and tasty. The scallops had a nice taste with the warm spinach and apples. The lamb was really tender and had a nice salty skin that gave it a nice flavor.

We stopped in Grundarfjordur for one night on our journey around the island. There are only three restaurants here, one was temporarily closed and the other has a 3.8 rating servings burgers and other fried foods. Bjargarsteinn was our choice and turned out above our expectations. The decor is homey and quaint and the menu varied and unique. If you are looking for a good meal, I would highly recommend it.

Amazing service. Food was great too.
Ordered fermented shark and Puffin. And the catch of the day for dinner.
Pricey but expected.

This place is a gem! The staff is super attentive and friendly. Everything we ordered came out quickly and tasted great. The seafood soup and scallops were especially delicious. We got a table by the window and we’re able to see Kirkjufell mountain in between the fog.

Visited in July 2022. Charming, small family-owned restaurant. Great atmosphere and food. The restaurant was highly recommended by our hosts, but we didn't realize how busy it would be on a Thursday evening. Luckily, they were able to accommodate a table for two, but I would definitely recommend making reservations!

I love seafood and a degustation menu, so I was very excited about eating here. The meal was absolutely delicious and we are so happy we prioritised it. A truly Icelandic dining experience to a world class standard. If you’re a foody then this place is a must.

Unplanned dinner here, fortunately recommended by owner of our guesthouse. No regrets.

Service was quite professional.

Food was fabulous both fish and lamp dishes.

Love the restaurant ambience.

As a vegetarian it’s been difficult to eat well in Iceland - not here. This was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Incredible experience, beautiful views, lovely service. My husband loved the red fish. Will recommend to anyone visiting Iceland.

Incredible! From the place to the staff to the food—it was all delightful! We’ve been in Iceland for a week, and this has been by far the best meal. Maybe one of my favorite meals ever. We had the salad and lamb consommé appetizers, followed by the catch and meat dish of the day, with the skyr mousse and blueberry sorbet for dessert. We are so glad we called ahead to ask for a reservation. When we entered the restaurant, our table was the only one open! The staff were friendly and attentive. It seemed all other patrons were also impressed by the food. Everything that came out of the kitchen looked delicious. A person at a table near us couldn’t stop saying “wow” as he ate. He even did a little dance in his seat! The ambience inside the restaurant was also wonderful, and the beautiful sunset over the mountain and water outside didn’t hurt either!

Agreed. I’ve been in Iceland for 6 days and this is the best meal I have had. Staff are wonderful. Have the tasting menu if you can. If not try the signature dishes. You won’t be disappointed.

Could very well be the best meal I’ve ever had. My husband had the Chef’s Choice Meal. I had the Lamb. Both were complex and inspiring and incredibly, INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS! Make sure to try the dessert wine made by the boss’ wife!

We're finishing our trip around Iceland and I will have to say that this was probably the best seafood dinner we've had in the country. Excellent plating and flavor. I was worried about the portion size since "pretty" food typically means barely anything. However, we left full and satisified. We had the redfish, catch of the day (halibut), lamb consomme, and the seafood soup.

This is one of best places I have had food in Iceland. The ambience is good. The service was great as well. We had the girl from Denmark, she was very helpful in choosing what to eat. There is limited options like all the places in Iceland but the food is top notch like Michelin level. Maybe it already has one. I went there based on local recommendations. The menu is unique with pictures explaining how each item would look like. They also have a tasting menu if you feel like you want a bite of everything. I would say they serve the best lamb filet in the world. It was cooked to perfection and so juicy and tasty. I also got the seafood soup as it was a local Icelandic delicacy. It was warm and hearty and I enjoyed it with the bread. I would recommend everyone visiting the area to go here. It is a little pricey but it's worth it. I would come back just to eat at this fine establishment

You don't need to try to eat at a Michelin star place, just visit Bjargastein. Pufin and scallops starter takes you to "Alice's Wonderland" and the rest of the dishes will tell the whole story....

Our dinner experience at Bjargarsteinn Mathùs was truly exceptional and stands out as one of the best we had during our time in Iceland. We were fortunate to be seated near the kitchen, where we had the pleasure of engaging in a delightful conversation with Chef Maury. It was fascinating to learn that our modern twist on Icelandic cuisine was expertly prepared by a Czech chef and assisted by a talented Hungarian sous chef.

The appetizer of smoked piffin was a delightful surprise and left us intrigued. We knew we couldn't leave Iceland without savoring at least one taste of this unique dish. However, the highlight of the meal was undoubtedly the main course – the Icelandic cod simply melted in our mouths, and the oysterplant flower ice cream was unbelievably delicious, leaving us craving for more.

We wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area. The combination of inventive dishes, a warm atmosphere, and engaging conversations with the chef made it an unforgettable dining experience.

Driving along the coast we saw a rainbow. We followed the rainbow to this place. We got the Chef’s Surprise menu. Honestly, it was among the top five meals I’ve ever had in my life. They put us in a tiny room at the top of a circular staircase with a single table and a spectacular view of the bay. Eva, our server, was bright and friendly. The food was complex and plentiful and prepared by a master chef. I have absolutely nothing even remotely bad to say about the experience. If you have a chance to eat here, DO IT.

Charming traditional Icelandic restaurant! The food is incredible - one of the best meals we’ve had. I highly suggest the scallop starter and the seafood soup - although quite literally everything on the menu was sensational. The location by the water is stunning, and the decor is homely, warm and inviting. What a gem!

We visited the place as a couple, we got served with a five course menu (10k ISK), which were very delicious and well worth the spending. Each course was well presented, creative and tasted excellent. The restaurant deserves a very high recommendation in Iceland and there is clear potential for a Guide Michelin recognition - for sure!!

Everything was perfectly arranged and tasteful balanced food, together with the wine selection. Service was smooth, efficient and ever-present.

The overall experience was excellent and we will be back - again!

This was probably the best meal that I’ve had in my entire life. We were lucky to be seated right next to the kitchen window where the chefs were preparing the food. They interacted with us all night and were cracking jokes. We truly couldn’t recommend this place more when on the peninsula or in Iceland. Thank you for giving us an absolute highlight of our trip.

Amazing! Five stars!

Everything about the food and location are perfect! Compliments to the chef, as the flavor profiles are diverse, complimentary, and immaculate, without a doubt one of the top ten best meals I've ever eaten. My wife and I shared the scallops. I had the filet of foal, and she had the fish of the day. We ordered two desserts which were also fabulous. The dishes are exquisitely prepared and beautifully plated. The atmosphere is incredible, located in an old icelandic home with views of Kirkjufell and the bay. If you are in Grundarfjörður, don't miss this place!

Best restaurant on our two week trip through Iceland. Cosy atmosphere, super friendly and welcoming service. And the food was just great. Just follow the recommendations of the chef and you will not be disappointed. And don't miss the tour through the house after dinner.
