You can spot it at the (western) junction of Snaefellsnesvegur and Helgafellssveitarvegur (roads 54 and 577); a fish (or whale) strung on a high pole also indicates the intersection.
A thin vegetation cover on the lava layer; take care of it.

Absolutely amazing drive! It's only 6 miles and can be done with a car if you're slow and it's not too muddy. I can't believe this drive isn't mentioned more in the Iceland FB groups.

One of the highlights of my trip to Iceland. Seriously. Dried lava as far as the eye can see. The area was deserted which was nice. And my boys loved climbing all over the rocks.

An amazing place to stop, admire and walk this 4,000 year old lava field. Easy access from the highway.

Great detour into otherworldly landscapes supposedly left by an enraged Berserker. The road is well traveled, and the center route lips you back to the main road.

Amazing lava field, scattered with small lakes and ponds. It's a mystery to me how it's practically unknown to tourists in the area.

As the previous review stated: definitely worth the detour! Doable with normal car but drive slow and take your time to take in the view. After visiting South, East and North Iceland it's great to still see another kind of landscape.

Hiked to the top of the peak right as you pull off. Best views I have seen in Iceland so far. Highly recommend the hike if you are able but it is a rough time getting to the top.

Super awesome detour through the lava fields. Drive slowly. Doable in a 2WD, we did it with our 2WD campervan!

Amazing lava fields, feels like you are on another planet with how unique it looks, can do the whole drive with a normal car, but would recommend a 4x4.

Increíble!! El mejor lugar de Snaefallness!! 💚No os voy a mentir, yo la lie un poco yendo con un coche que no es 4x4, además, fui por la ruta más larga 🚗
Tuve que pasar casi todo el camino con la primera marcha, a excepción de muy pocos ratos, pasar charcos de agua en los que casi me quedo atascado, y trozos en los que pensé que me iba a caer abajo por la montaña con el coche... Pues pese a esta liada, puedo decir que mereció la pena ✌ los paisajes son de otro mundo 🌍 te envuelve un verde muy intenso con montañas de arena rojo oscuro intenso, y rocas muy picudas, además, los contrastes del paisaje cambian mucho según la zona del camino, pero todos, absolutamente todos, son muy bellos!!
Si tenéis un 4x4 🚙 no dudéis en ir, y sinó, hacerlo solo en un día muy bueno y con mucho cuidado.

Colada de lava que se estén per quilòmetres i quilòmetres dintre d'un paisatge esgarrifós i extraordinari.

Impresionante el campo de lava que hay que atravesar. La carretera es de tierra pero se puede acceder bien con el coche. Sólo por las cistas, merece la pena!!
