Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple ,East Tower

The Meenakshi Amman East Tower is one of the 12 temple towers or gopurams of the Meenakshi Amman Temple, a historic Hindu temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Meenakshi, a form of Shakti, and her consort, Sundareshwarar, a form of Shiva.

The East Tower was built by Maravarman Sundara Pandyan I in 1231 CE. It is also known as Avanivendaraman, later renamed as Sundara Pandya Thirukkopuram. It has nine storeys and 1011 stucco figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters painted in vivid colours.

The East Tower is the main entrance to the temple complex. It faces the Pottamarai Kulam (Golden Lotus Pond), a large pool where devotees can bathe in holy water. The pond is surrounded by a colonnade whose walls are decorated with murals depicting the miracles Shiva performed in Madurai.

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is a living temple, where various festivals and rituals are celebrated throughout the year. The most famous one is the goddess's wedding festival, which is celebrated for twelve days in the month of Chaitra (April/May).

The Meenakshi Amman Temple is one of the most magnificent and popular temples in India. It attracts millions of pilgrims and tourists every year. It is also a symbol of the rich cultural heritage and artistic excellence of Tamil Nadu.

2000 year's old Temple, very powerful Temple, MAIN GODESS SRI MEENAKSHI, GOD SHIVA AS CALLED SOKKANATHAR ,SUNDARESWARAR , TEMPLE LOCATED IN CENTRE POINT OF MADURAI CITY

It's good to visit around 5am you can finish it soon... The rush is less and the line is not that long... By the way temple closes around 6.30 and then opens at 7. 30 or 8 I am not sure... But late morning it's a huge rush you will have to wait for hours in that case.

Madurai Meenakshi temple can be accessed through East Gate, car parking is only near the north gate. Temple is awesome, you need more than 1 to 2 hours to see the temple. Near each gate there is a cloack room to keep your bags, footwear and mobiles.

It was so amazing experience in meenakshi temple if you visit it you feel so much spiritual and also you experiences mental peace .it is more than 500 years old. Temple.

Visiting this shrine is a weird experience. If you don't have much time, hire a guide to help you grasp the complexities of Darshan as well as the subtleties of magnificent sculptures.
What isn't noted is that even when the Darshan is officially open, the queues for the Abhishek are held up for an hour six times a day. At any given time, 600/700 persons are awaiting the unique Darshan 100. So plan on standing for at least 2/3 of an hour.
If you become separated from the group as a result of the mobiles being left at the gate, make plans to meet at a certain location. Darshan is first performed at Meenakshi temple, then at Sundareswarar temple. After that you can leisurely walk around soaking in the beautiful sculptures and the thousand pillars hall.

The temple staff and security are helpful and guided us properly to enter the temple and also where to keep mobile and footwear.
