There is a forest on the banks of the river Ajay near Durgapur in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal. The name of the forest is Garh Jungle. In this day trip there were four of us- me, my brother Ankit, and my two friends Mrinmoy and Kaushik who went to Garh Jungle.

From Asansol to Durgapur and then Muchipara. Then we took the road on the left of the highway that leads to the river Ajay. A little further along the road we saw dense forest on both sides of this beautiful road. After a few kilometers we took a turn towards an unpaved road toward our right leaving this road and entered the forest. The jungle here is not impenetrable but full of vegetation and thrill.

In this forest there is a mythical ashram of Medha Muni. There is a lot of history hidden. There are myths. Going there, I heard that it was in this forest that King Surath and Vaishya Samadhi heard the greatness of Goddess Mahamaya from Medhas Muni and organized Durga Puja here in spring (Basanta). According to Sri Sri Chandi and Markandeya Purana, this Durga Puja of King Surath, which was held in the Garh Jungle, was the first Durga Puja in the world.

Very very calm and peaceful place this is. I liked the place so much that I went there for several times. And every time it impressed me. Not much people come there, since the road is very very bad. I actually mean it. The road is pathetic. But I will suggest you, you must visit this place. But dont come in early morning or late afternoon or evening. Avoid during summer and rainy season.

Very nice place amidst jungle, at the bank of the Ajay river. The road is treacherous, would recommend only big vehicles. The history as it is being told cannot be verified, as there are no documents from archeological survey of India. Visit in winter is recommended.

Garh Jungle is a beautiful natural spot, situated in Kanksa block of West Bardhaman. It has botth religious and historical importance. Inside the dense forest, a large area is surrounded by ancient earthen fortification, like walls of a fort, on South bank of Ajay river.

Whole new experience of Durga Puja in the midst of jungle. Never imagined of so much crowd and traffic in a jungle place like this. It's a must have experience.

A favourite place of mine. You can see peacocks in the jungle if you are lucky enough.

Good place for one day trip/picnic... Garh jungle is a dence shal forest.. The Durga Temple is deep inside the Jungle.. Upto Deul road is good but deul to Durga Mandir is mud/moram road with full of big big water puddle and stones.. bike is ok but low ground clearance car can find difficulties.. Peacock can be seen... If luck favour..

Historical and spiritual place located near durgapur. Easily accessible from durgapur, bolpur. Though road from main road is not good but scenic beauty is at its best . A must visit place.

Very much Historical importance there.1. I have heard when laxman sen escaped his kingdom and took shelter in Garh Jungle, he started " Durga puja " here in middle of a forest.

Great historical place. It is said that first puja of goddess Durga was done here, till now every year a big event is held during the time of durga puja.I was fascinated at the sight of this beautiful terracotta temple inside the dense inpenetrable forest.

Lovely place inside a semi dense forest...several yogi r there.... Shayamrupa ma temple is within 300mtrs....one must try the prasad there

I loved the scenery and adventurous feel more than the temples. It's you pay a visit there be sure to check the tetul tree which has a big cave inside it.
