Very much worth visiting. 250Rs for foreigners, 15Rs for Indians. The beautiful exterior is undergoing some restoration. The interior is like stepping back in time to a museum of a bygone age. No doubt it will eventually be rescued from decay. But in the meantime it has a huge charm of its own. An eclectic collection of everything from superb Hindu, Buddhist and Jain sculpture to threadbare stuffed animals. It isn't what you would expect from a modern museum but come anyway!

Loved the exhibits housed in the various museums and galleries, especially the extensive collection of sculptures from the various time periods. It was an eye-opening and enriching experience and I would strongly recommend people visit to learn more about India’s heritage and culture. Set aside at least 2-3 hours to visit all the various museums and galleries.

With its intriguing voyage through India's diverse cultural fabric, the museum provides a special fusion of art and history. All visitors will have a more enriching experience because of the interesting and instructive exhibitions. In particular, my 10-year-old daughter loved the vivid exhibitions and interactive displays that brought history to life. Visitors can experience India's diverse legacy through the museum's meticulous curation, which cultivates an awareness for our cultural origins.
The good environment was further enhanced by the staff's eagerness to share thoughts and their excitement. The museum is a great family destination because of its clear commitment to education. The overall tourist experience is improved by the immaculate grounds and the unambiguous signs. I value the Chennai National Museum's initiatives to help young people understand and love history. It's more than just a museum; it's a historical voyage that deepens visitors' appreciation and comprehension of India's rich past. We anticipate additional explorations and visits to this cultural treasure in the future.

A beautiful place worthy of multiple visits. The museum has to offer history, arts, science themed houses and a beautiful garden to enjoy some peace away from all the rush and crowds. Their audio tour app was really good at explaining the displays especially at the bronze museum.

Today I visited the Government Museum in Chennai, also known as the Madras Museum, and I was amazed by its sheer size and incredible array of historical artifacts and cultural heritage. Established in 1851, this treasure trove houses an extensive collection spanning various fields like archaeology, numismatics, art, and natural history. Visitors can explore fascinating exhibits such as ancient sculptures, coins, rare manuscripts, and the impressive Bronze Gallery showcasing exquisite Chola bronzes. This iconic institution offers an enriching journey through India's rich past and diverse cultural legacy.

One of the good government museums in Chennai. They have many sculptures from the 10th and 11th century. Many sculptures are from the chola dynasty of Lord Rama and vishnu and ganesha.
Art galary also has many old drawings of English governors.
Science Museum is also great for kids. Many artificial things were made to explain different civilizations. And body organ details.
Even all indian states dress codes and living are explained by dolls.
Stories and information are also available by audio. Which can directly access by mobiles.
And armory is also their, having many old weapons. Total 3 hr. Required to see and understand all the things.
Good place to visit.

The Chennai Government Museum, an architectural marvel, stands as a proud symbol of the city's rich cultural heritage. This iconic institution is not merely a historical archive but a doorway to the past, blending architecture and cultural treasures seamlessly. It's an ideal spot for a day outing (open on all days except Friday).

The neoclassical design, adorned with Corinthian columns and a pristine white façade, is captivating. Established in 1851, the museum reflects colonial influences, boasting impeccable symmetry and intricate detailing.

Inside, an extensive array of artifacts spans centuries and cultures – sculptures, paintings, numismatic collections, archaeology, and zoological exhibits. Highlights include the bronze gallery featuring Chola bronzes and the Amaravati gallery showcasing ancient Buddhist relics. The children's museum and science corner are quick yet delightful explorations, featuring a giant whale skeleton and a dinosaur model with sound effects.

Affordable entrance fees, approximately INR 20 for adults and INR 10 for kids below 12, make this historical sanctuary accessible. Foreign tourists may pay a slightly higher fee. Ample parking is available on the campus.

While exploring the vast museum, bring a water bottle to stay refreshed. A small food kiosk provides casual refreshments.

The Chennai Government Museum, with its six buildings, offers a comprehensive experience. Although the library isn't open to casual visitors, it's a treat for knowledge enthusiasts.

Beyond history buffs, the museum caters to families, providing an educational yet enjoyable experience for children. It's a journey through time, making learning fun.

In essence, the Chennai Government Museum celebrates culture, history, and architecture, offering an opportunity to relive the past and create lasting memories. Don't miss exploring this historical gem with your loved ones.

Great exhibits and display!!
If you love history, anthropology or sociology, you must visit this place. If you not an history enthusiast but want to have good pictures too, I would recommend visiting this place, it has culture and society exhibits on display under a roof.
The musuem houses beautiful artifacts, sculptures from ancient history to modern history period. The sculptures are well labeled and information on those are explained well. There are epigraphs, inscriptions and wall panels which take you back to history. There is great scope for preserving and presenting the exhibits in a better way. You get to see all these beautiful exhibits at a nominal entry fee of 15 rs.
There is parking available in the musuem complex.

I would totally recommend this place to everyone, it's a great cultural and educational experience.
