A very good and authentic restaurant in the heart of madurai serving south indian delicacies. The restaurant is right at the entrance of south gate of meenakshi temple.
i tried their idli, dosa, medu wada, coffee must say this restaurant lives by its name by serving affordable and hygienic food.

Kesari was particularly extraordinary.

This place is very popular for its breakfast and tiffin options . Even the simplest dishes like idly , dosa , rava dosa and pongal stood out .

Service is quick although the place is always crowded so it’s usually worth the wait .

Parking cars outside may be a problem because it’s a busy street in madurai .
Hands down must try breakfast spots in madurai

What can I say about the legendary Modern Restaurant? The first time I had their signature banana leaf lunch...it was 'Love at first Bite'.. Thereafter every visit to this temple town Madurai and lunchtime would be planned around Modern's Lunch timings... I heard their other snacks are also good though not tasted it and over today's banana leaf lunch, met a colleague who was raised in Madurai... His take.. The food taste and quality have not changed since he was in the sixth grade... He is now 54.... That says a lot about this restaurant & it's food taste and quality and I can vouch for the same over my 15 year experience... A 'must eat here' on your foodie bucket list!

South Indian food best quality taste yammy 😋

Tasted Pongal, just awesome. It melts when you eat it. Fried rice was fine. Will be crowded most of the times. Very near temple. There are no other good options available.

Best veg restaurant near Madurai Meenakshi Temple... Kesari was the highlight.

Very authentic South Indian restaurant. Idly with sambar is very famous in this restaurant. Also Kesari sweet is one of the must taste item here. They opens at 7.20am. Prices will be little higher than similar restaurants. With in 2 to 4 mins all tables will be filled… imagine about the demand for this restaurant.

We had breakfast at this hotel and the food was excellent. The staff were very courteous. Try Kesari which was very good.

Highly recommended if you're in Madurai

The best ever restaurant I have visited in Madurai. I have been to MR since 1999 and it's soo good. Especially their Dosa Sambar Kaara Chutney, Fried Idly and Parotta! Surreal taste!

Omg! It's very old restaurant. They have excellent taste in most of their dishes. Their Sambar is the Best!
Still the price is very much reasonable!

Awesome food...if you are looking for the special taste of Madurai food just rush to this restaurant... it's looks quite vintage..but they have enough recipes to activate your taste buds...the restaurant crew know how to manage the customer..the service is very nice...if you have any plan to visit Madurai, don't miss this.. value is quite much than others but it worth for you..

This is probably one of the restaurants I have most visited in my whole life. My parents have always loved the taste/quality and quantity of food they serve here. I visited this place after many years and I couldn't believe they tasty so good even now. My judgement was based on the looks of the place initially thinking that it was badly maintained and so quality would have also slipped . But surprisingly no, it did. Taste was really good. Staff here can come across as rude, not ready to take orders, expecting you to get your own token and the cleaning staff ready to clean even before one can get up to leave the table. So not everyone gets that. I would only say, give this restaurant a chance and try their food. It might not look great, but it definitely serves good food in the city.

We ordered Puri bhaji, dosa, idli. Puri bhaji were very testy and my mom liked ghee roasted plain dosa.

Ask for AC section , First you need to take a slip for ac section little language problem but best Vegetarian South Indian food is served here.

This is a good recommendation for folks who look for exclusively vegetarian food.
We had gone for lunch and we had meals served on banana leaves.
All items ( made without using onion and garlic) were tasty. The service was good.
The kheer ( payasam) was really delicious 😋 Nothing showy or flashy but good harmless tasty food.

One of oldest and still standing restaurants in Madurai. Very well maintained and quality food. Personally I will rate their lunch meals best in terms of price and food quality. Even their parcel service is very good with good quantity of food and minimal plastic use. Highly recommended if you are in town and looking for quality food
